    SPEWS might act responsible, many other blocklists apparently do not.
    I frequently get my E-Mail bounced because some stupid list (or malconfigured client of that list) considers my ISP "bad".

    Last time that happened was only 5 days ago and evaluating the bounce notice was a particular bitter expirience:

    Not only does the quoted URL give a 404 but on top of that the homepage http://dynablock.easynet.nl explains that this blocklist has been discontinued on Dec 01 '03!

    Very nice, my mail was zapped by a blocklist that was shutdown a month ago.

    This is not the first time this kinda thing happens to me.
    I see my mail eaten by spamcop, spews and others frequently.

    So, I tell you from my expirience: The blocklist-approach creates a lot more serious problems than the one it tries to solve. Spam wastes bandwidth and ressources but when important mail gets randomly sucked up by a blackhole (pun intended..) that is much worse!

    What are we supposed to do?
    Switch ISP until we find one that doesn't get blocked as often?
    Ring up our ISPs and ask them to negotiate with the blocklist operators?

    There must be better options...

    Spamcop is one of the blocklists that has been under perpetual attack by spammers. Recently, spammers started a rather major DDoS against spamcop and several other services.

    Antispam services that have limited operating resources (such as the now defunct monkeys.com and osirusoft.com) -- while extremely useful services, simply didn't have the means to withstand major attacks. Those two services had to be shut down because the owners could not deal with the onslaught. Spamhaus, and probably now Spamcop will be able to withstand attacks.

    Kudos to any company that joins in on the spam fighting effort. Also worth mentioning are the good folks at Easynet, who have been running top-notch anti-abuse DNSBLs that are available to the public.

    But not whitelisting as we know it.

    Think about it: most spam comes from cable and adsl connected machines. dynablock.easynet.nl is trying to block each and every dynamic IP on earth, effectively making it a whitelist of static and therefore blockable IP's.

    One could even take this one step further: blacklist the entire internet and whitelist known mailservers. Getting out of that should be easy, but no so easy that a spammer could do it automatically. And when you're spamming from a whitelisted IP, the IP is blacklisted again for, say, 1 week. Then it can be whitelisted again, but when you're spamming again, then it's blacklisted for a month.

    The hard part of such a whitelist is: where do you start? I think it would be sensible to start out by simply tagging mail originating from blacklisted IP's. Early adopters can then whitelist each and every IP they expect mail from. After a while a sufficiently small amount of mail will be tagged by the blacklist, so it can be used to start blocking with it.

    If we only could convince each and every postmater on earth to use such a system, it could be very, very useful.

    Meanwhile, please use Dynablocker. It can really help making h4x0red boxes useless as a spam source.
