IBM ThinkPads
IBM ThinkPads work well with Linux. You might have to sell the farm to afford one, but they're quality.

Re:Maybe just meThere is a major need for *nix on pre-builts. here are a couple of reasons:
- Installing an OS on a system lets you know that the hardware does work, i.e. eLinux.com does a manual install on all linux boxes to make sure components work
- If you are going to throw an OS on a pre-built system, might as well be a real OS like linux
- If there are not pre-built linux boxes on the shelves at your computer stores, only the adventurous and the geeks will be running linux, and M$ will still be the supreme dominant on desktops, and who wants that
If we want to see a more broad adoption of linux, it needs to be easy for your adverage consumer to get an run. I don't particulary like Lindows, but I love the concept, as it will help bring more people into the fold and increase the use of linux in the overall marketplace.
Many people have to e guided, even wal-mart understands this, hence their new line of linux boxes, so why shouldn't the linux world be the ones to do the guiding. Let's face it folks, if it is not us doing the guiding, it will be the evil empire of gates.
Ok, back to work for me...

ImmunixImmunix is our security-hardened Linux system. Immunix offers a security confinement mechanism called SubDomain which is similar to SELinux and HP's Virtual Vault technology, which is what is incorporated into their HP-LX product. SubDomain is "in between" SELinux and HP-LX, in the following ways:
- Complexity and Flexibility: The more complex a product is, the more flexible it can be. SubDomain is less complex to manage than SELinux, but offers more flexibility than HP-LX.
- Price: SELinux is free, Immunix Systems are $90 each, and HP-LX is $3000 each.
- StackGuard: resists most buffer overflow attacks.
- FormatGuard: resists most printf format bug attacks.

Re:My chinese labmates use Windows becauseWell, I'm in mainland US. Not too many CLE distros available that I've seen.
:-)You might start by checking out this listof foreign language distros. You'll find links to two Chinese language distros there: BluePoint Linux, which the site describes as the most-used distro in mainland China, and Linpus Linux, which is the biggest distro in Taiwan and (I understand) also has a fair market share on the mainland.
Chinese Language Extensions (CLE) can also be downloaded separately.
I can't speak to the programming aspects of the CLE distros, but as far as general use Chinese support goes, they're quite good.

shopping for thin-and-light linux notebook
a few calls to select U.S. retailers to buy a "thin-and-light 14"TFT linux notebook",
2000.dec.19 - dec.23
dell seems to offer some redhat models on their website, but the links fail if you try to buy.
dell sales-people (on the phone) say linux is not available.
dell's Inspiron 4000 comes very close to how i'd like to see my machine, at $2350.
compaq 1.800.888.0220: (don't have any linux notebooks at this time)
compaq is the reason why i want the manufacturer to install the OS for me -
i spent 2 days in 2000-may failing to become friends with compaq's graphics chip.
fujitsupc.com 877-372-3473 (don't sell linux.)
gateway.com 800-846-4208 (we don't offer that operating system)
toshiba.com 1-800-316-0920 (runs on eastern time or something?) no linux
ibm-direct: yes they have linux pre-installed but the price seems to be about 60% higher
than dell+windowsMe
--- some lesser-known retailers and re-sellers:
tuxtops: don't have "thin-and-light" models
enpower: "thin-and-light" model coming soon - that may be worth the wait.
here in LA, some PC Club employees said they would put linux on there for me.
necxdirect.com (failed - no phone number listed)
microwarehouse 1-800-397-8508 "sorry, we don't carry any."
elinux has some 20 models of older yet pricey notebooks, nothing juicy.
--- places that I didn't get through ---
nec 888-632-8701 just rings and rings
sony 1 800 352-7669 (will try next week)
CDW 800 850 4239 (closes early?) -
They exist, but value declines over time...Others have provided references to the HP Jornada, which is indeed a StrongARM/WinCE-based notebook computer, as well as the Yopy, which is a StrongARM/Linux-based handheld computer.
It would be a cool thing if there was a Linux port to the Jornada, unfortunately, the references I can find on the LinuxCE mailing lists are not terribly specific/useful.
What's really unfortunate is that there has been no progression of the StrongARM series over the last couple years. It came out as a slick, low power, 250MHz CPU. That's still what it is, despite two years of surrounding technical advances. Transmeta Crusoe is becoming a available for similar applications, and may provide an even better mix of computational power and "battery efficiency."
Of course, the funny thing is that Elinux.com sells the Journada 690 as a Linux-compatible product!

Re:Advertisements already outUh... my correction.. It says "shipping 4/8" (i suspect that's the 8th of April) in the advertisement link above... so the official announcement will probably be tomorrow, and all mirrors will be working, but "the official box" won't be shipping for a couple of days.
Im speculating, but this is the usual procedure with Red Hat releases, if I remember correctly. As a side-note, I think all official announcements of new RedHat versions have been on Mondays... anybody want to clarify on this one?

Advertisements already outSeems like the ads for 6.2 professional are already out on Freshmeat and Slashdot... I got one, and it took me here. Seems like elinux.com is expecting an official release of 6.2 tomorrow so they can start shipping, or else I don't understand the ad, since 6.2 isn't officially released yet...
