Happy Hacking Professional 2 TypeS
I also agree that a daily work tool should be of highest quality and totally worth the investment. For coding, Happy Hacking Pro2 keyboard is perfect http://www.pfu.fujitsu.com/hhk... You can maybe order it here http://www.elitekeyboards.com/... (I got my own from jp). Slightly expensive but TOTALLY WORTH IT. There is also a silent version (Type S). Youtube it to see the difference. They keys are a mechanical/capacitive hybrid that feels godly to type on, been using mine for 5y+ now. For gaming it is not so well suited though due to the layout. (Function keys need two hands). You can get an el-cheapo gaming keyboard for that (there are good ones with anti-ghosting, etc for 20USD).

Re:Inexpensive USB keyboard
No, what you want is an expensive USB keyboard. Like a nice Unicomp version of the Model M, or maybe a nice capacitive switch keyboard. There are so many (pricey!) options.
Also, I hate cables moving around getting tangled, so I got a wireless mouse.

Re:Mechanical Keyboard
I sprung for an 87u and it is without a doubt the best keyboard I've ever used. Topre keys are just amazing.

Keyboard Recommendations
I use a RealForce tenkeyless. The key travel, return and feel is absolutely second to none, you won't believe the difference. If you want the "Cadillac" and are willing to spend more for something you'll have for a long time, I'd consider a Topre based keyboard like the RealForce.
Short of that, get any keyboard with Cherry MX switches. I prefer brown but some people have a different preference. Good luck! -
Re:Wish it came without the numpad
Here's one with the Cherry Browns and no numpad for $99 + approx. $14 shipping. Haven't tried it.

They don't have to be noisy
You can get foam "landing pads" which eliminate the bottoming-out clackiness of all the cherry-type keyboards. That makes all but the blue switches almost entirely silent.

Re:So these are budget high-end keyboards
Any of the Leopold tenkeyless found @ http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=leopold are good choices. I've been using the one with the Cherry MX Black switches for some time now at $work, and it is much nicer than typing on a logitech dinovo or apple wireless keyboard.
