    I was looking to browse and copy files bnetween a variety of platforms in a really friendly way that wouldn't show up on most script kiddy scans. Gopher was the obvious protocol, unfortunately the server was a WinXP box and I was unable to find an appropriate gopher server for it. IE & Mozilla still support gopher://, does Safari?

    BTW, for those reminiscing about text-based gopher don't forget GopherVR that came out just as http/html hit. An interesting experiment in 3D virtualization of online resources I've yet to see it equalled for other protocols.

    I was sure that this was going to happen for years. Email is perfect for this -- high barrier to change. Get 'em hooked, then milk 'em.

    However, I expected that Yahoo was going to offer better service. I would assume that IMAP support, Yahoo not selling your information, etc. would come with this.

    There are better email providers, if you're planning on paying money. Take a look at the links on this page, ofr instance.

    I expect MS will collect a lot more users on Hotmail from this...

    Make me something that doesn't suck,and I'll pay for it, don't force me to upgrade every 20 minutes to a more bloated piece of crap...

    Unfortunately, if I write software that doesn't suck, doesn't need patches, and does what you want, you'll buy one copy (Netware 3, WinZip, Eudora) and in 2 years I'll be bankrupt.

    If I write software with tons of broken features and requiring constant upgrades for 'compatibility' and security (SAP, QuickBooks, and Windows 95), I'm guaranteed plenty of repeat customers.

    Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go buy a $100 ink cartridge for my $30 printer.

    The guy is talking about OUTSOURCING his email to someone else who will also provide SPAM filtering. Hosting a server to use specifically for several mailboxes sounds like a waste. Also consider the time/effort/learning required on your part to maintain and admin the box.

    eMailman has some information about email outsourcing and links to providers.
    SpamCop appears to, besides spam reporting, provide an email filter relay for your inbound messages. The service does cost ($.50 / MB)
    LanSoft does the same thing

    I know there are more. My experience with outsourced services are mixed. The lack of control & flexibility are balanced by the extended knowledge the vendor usually has, support they provide (which includes knowledge, hardware/software fixes, 24/7, etc) and the measurabley reduced headache on my end :)
