Their sampling rate is pretty decent.

Synthpop
Its probably a bit too late to post to this thread but Anything Box actually played the batcave (nyc) not so long ago (2 years or so?).
(speaking synth nostalgia redflag played there right around the same time period)
The synthpop thing has recently been given a revival of sorts lately, especially now w/ its superceded version hip "electroclash" version.
If you do happen to like any of the anything box songs, take a look at the different drum label.
Particularly, take a look at De/vision, Wolfsheim, Cosmicity.. (these still get a lot of "club play" btw).. if you like your synths a bit darker and moody, take a look at metropolis records Bands like And One, Covenant, VNV Nation and Apoptygma Bezerk have HUGE followings even here in america.
Finally, if this synth stuff all seems a bit to cheezy, we can hip you out w/ the electroclash stuff. Most of this is on emperor norton but Fischer spooner, Felix the Housecat, Ladytron, Miss Kitten and the hacker all have pretty big followings currently. (Fischer spooner just got signed to capitol).. Incidentally, and it speaks mostly of where the kids who produce the mtv shows hang out (brooklyn club scene :)), a LOT of the background music to all the real world shows are clips from these bands (if you were curious as to where the music was coming from). One of the offical VH1 segways is actually fischer spooner's emerge now as well. Anyway there is a ton of good stuff out there all w/ huge active followings w/ club nights in many of the major cities as well.

Back in the day......the early post-punk, industrial, indie, ambient, goth folks (like me) used to follow labels:
You want good industrial? - WaxTrax Records
You want decent indie? - Homestead Records
Ethereal/goth? - 4AD
A lot of those labels got bought by the major labels and kind of screwed over. But... there do appear to be new indies popping up introducing lots of cool new stuff. If you are into electronic stuff (anything from retro to glitch) the following labels seem pretty good:
Emperor Norton
I discovered the following (mostly retro) acts on Emperor Norton:
Miss Kittin and the Hacker
Felix Da Housecat
Ladytron
For glitch, I've been following Warp Records
Some of the great glitch stuff they have:
Plaid
The Boards of Canada
Autechre
Broadcast (This one isn't glitch it's more of the new psychedelic wave hitting the UK)
So, I suggest that you find a few things you like and then start shopping the labels. If they aren't majors, chances are you'll find some good surprises. Good luck, and happy searching...

RTFM "The Wire" and some other leads
Some hints to get you started: First start to read "The Wire", which is not "Wired" (go to The Wire). It's a magazine that knows what happens from month to month. Subscribe, get the subscribers-only CDs they send you, find out what you like, and explore. Don't listen to people who tell you that Trance is the big one these days, or that their old heroes have defined your listening future.
Buy samplers with different artists on it. One that fits the topic is Electronic 01. Try also the Click'n'Cuts compilation series.
Go to festivals like Sonar, Ars Electronica and Mutek, or at least find out what's hot there.
If you want to get into specifics, start with the labels. Places like Mego, Tigerbeat6, Kitty-Yo, Chicks on Speed, Mille Plateaux, Touch, Ninja Tune, Orthlong Musork, Staalplat, Domino, Emperor Norton, our heroes Rune Grammofon etc.Follow as many leads as you can, be open-minded.
Check out special interest web shops and sites like Brainwashed, .
What you will find is probably that European, especially German, and Japanese artists are pretty much top of the line these days, but that this keeps changing. My most used line at Sonar this year was "We can see that, at least they're German".
Oh yeah, and the recent "Wired" article about electronic music was about five years out of date.
Noise, all.

Re:Real Economies
You're assuming the government would ever GIVE a "virtual" world rights of any kind. It would never happen
Ahem...might I remind you of a certain mister Emperor Norton?
