Re:As a representative of one burned by PayPal
Well, if you're looking for a way to receive money from your customers, there's always esellerate.
(I'm not affiliated with them, just a happy customer.)

PayPal+eSellerate
Hi,
I went through the same problem last month for the website of my company (see sig). PayPal may be OK for "donations" but it is not good enough for e-commerce websites. PayPal is down or broken in some way about 100% of the time. Also, many people (including me) don't want to pay with PayPal because of all the problems you can read on PayPalSucks.
So I offer CC payments through eSellerate. I handle my own shopping cart and the user picks the payment means when he checks out. eSellerate is good for me because the commission is 10% flat, without a fixed fee. Most similar services charge something like "5% or $2, whichever is higher". My product cost $6.99, so $2 is a lot of money.
Also, you can really customize the checkout process on eSellerate so that the customer can't tell the difference between your site and the eSellerate checkout site. You can't do that with PayPal.
As a conclusion, please do not offer PayPal only. PayPal is not a reliable company and lot's of people avoid them. -
Re:50% is better than 5%....
The publisher for this is ESellerate, which is just a software selling outfit. PDF files are no different than a copy of some antivirus software when it comes to publishing.

Re:The View From 20,000mm
Thomas Warfield, the "another developer" mentioned above, notes the distribution of the games through third party portals and the reliance on this as a failure point. He goes on in another post to mention online shareware/software distributors such as Digital River, eSellerate and SWREG. I'd be interested in hearing anyone's experiences of these services, especially involved with generating income from smaller games (ie. 1 or 2 person projects). Are there hidden costs that impose a break-even sales limit, and so on?

Geolocation by IP address
Increasingly, Google is customizing results based on your IP number. This is referred to in the industry as "IP delivery based on geolocation."
Umm... in some other cases, this is considered a good thing. eSellerate, for example, does the same thing with their multi-currency support. If you were in the UK, would you want to see the currency default to USD and have to switch to Pounds, or would you rather have it default to Pounds? -
Re:Why ?
I am still trying to buy the original quake version, but cannot seem to find it in any stores. Anyone know of any stores still selling it?
Ultimate Quake includes Q1, Q2, and Q3a. Maybe it's a waste of money if you already have Q2 or Q3a separately, but $30 isn't bad, and it's the only way I've seen lately to get Q1.
Actually, nevermind -- I just checked id's site, and you can buy Quake 1 by itself for $30 (as a download, you get no official media). At that price, you'd be better off picking up Ultimate Quake and giving away the Q2 and Q3a disks if you don't need them. For the same $30, you actually get the games on CD.
