Re:Silly and inflammatory
I found this:
Dr. Miller admits to being banned from the Google app store as well. In fact Miller's wife was also recently denied a developer account by the Google Play Store.

Re:An IP Address can be a person in some cases
You do know that MACs are hardware IDs and don't get passed around and used by multiple users.
Dude, quit. You are obviously in the wrong line of work if your view of the fundamentals of your career is so obviously, demonstrably wrong.

Fortress-style Security
Build a city surrounded with the tallest, thickest, and strongest walls you can think of (or afford). It's great security, but only from the outside world. Since its impossible to guarantee every citizen isn't a mass-murderer or kleptomaniac, we also have to have locks on individual houses.
Build a network with the nicest firewall/IPS/IDS/whatever you can thing of (or afford). It's great security, but only from the outside world. Since its impossible to guarantee every guest laptop isn't loaded with viruses or malware, we also have to have firewalls on individual workstations.

Malware!!!
That's the main tech boom since 1996! Think about it. Viruses existed back then, and they were destructive. They'd crash your machine on purpose, but not before alerting you to their presence. Botnets? Definitely a 21st-century tech. There was lots of spam, but it didn't contain viruses, and the web was pretty safe. Even using IE
:) The big-name viruses: Melissa, ILoveYou, Blaster...all newer.Heck Smashing the Stack for Fun and Profit wasn't published until 1998.
The net hasn't improved much since '96. It's the bad guys that have. Where will THEY be in 13 years?

Rainbow Tables
First off, sorry about the loss. Even if the person isn't close to you personally, seeing how it affects the family is bad enough.
My advice would be to start with the laptop. Boot it off a rescue cd or USB stick and grab all the personal account (including root) md5 hashes out of the /etc/shadow file.
Then run those hashes through a rainbow crack to try and get some clear text representations of the hashes. Info on Rainbow Tables, here, here, and here.
Boot the laptop to a prompt and try all the clear text representations for the accounts and see if any of them work. If they do, then great, you have the passwords.
The passwords themselves are worthless on the laptop (you've already demonstrated you can snoop it without them, as you had to to obtain the hashes). Their value is in the fact that they _may_ have used the same passwords for their email, online accounts, etc.

Re:The ultimate attainable security ...
If I am a hacker, why would I use a PC in a hacked corporate network to store my porn?

Quote: "Account from Kevin D. Mitnick ... I Put My Freedom on the Line for Sheer Entertainment ..."
Quote from Wikipedia: "As a notorious figure, Mitnick has been targeted by hackers who wish to bolster their status and for people seeking to prove their abilities."
Paraphrase/personal opinion: Still, it is Humans who define the World. These are better dealt with by means related to Social Sciences/Humanities (if you like, you may add Arts) rather than Math.
