Re:Apple TV = xbox?
The average US power rate is 12.22 cents/kWh. There are an average of 730 hours in a month, so an average cost of $89.21/kWMonth
$5/mth is 0.056kW, or 56 Watts. That means the console is using an average of 56 watts over the month. This chart suggests an average of 80W between PS4 and XB1 when streaming 1080, and negligible when idle. That means the console is being used 17 hours per day, the console is faulty, or the poster is lying (or excluding the TV / stereo power usage).
I'm surprised these devices use so much power. I'm pretty sure my Chromecast uses less than 5W while streaming Netflix.

Fuck off citation-needer AC shill. It is well documented that these things are an absolute shit parade. At this point, the burden of proof is on any apologists.
But, here's some articles, shillfuck!
The lockscreen assault...

http://www.theverge.com/2015/4...OP claimed that he's getting advertised Office. You claim he needs proof. While this debate rages, here's tutorial on how to make Microsoft STOP advertising Office. Which, of fucking COURSE it does.
http://www.howtogeek.com/22632...
Presumably, the "Get Skype" app is the one to disable to stop the Skype stuff he complains about.
Oh, and if you NEED Skype, here's how to disable ads in Skype. Uh, this worked a year ago? I don't know if it is current.

Haven't I heard this before?
Comcast turns 50,000 paying customer homes into public hotspots, millions more by the end of the year.

Re:Why is anyone still running Firefox?
Why is anyone still running Firefox?
I haven't met a privacy concern I can't address yet with Firefox, whereas with Chrome I can only cover about 50% of the issues. I don't agree with the Set of Recent Distraction Additions, but with Firefox I can at least get robust control over every bit of my browsing experience. [NoScript, Cookie Whitelist, uMatrix, +hosts blacklist, in case you were curious. No Adblocker required.]

Re:Why are websites dragging their feet on this?
Flash on Chrome doesn't use NPAPI it uses PPAPI, is distributed and updated with the browser, and isn't going anywhere so far.
That said there are things Google might do to discourage Flash content, such as quit running / displaying it by default.

Over a year ago, Google's cars had already logged over 700k miles in California and Nevada with zero accidents where they were at fault: http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/181508-googles-self-driving-car-passes-700000-accident-free-miles-can-now-avoid-cyclists-stop-for-trains
That aside, there will be a handful of robotic cars on the roads as opposed to many thousands of manned cars. You're statistically unlikely to even see a robotic car, let alone get in a collision with one.

Re:The future is coming.
You expect a laptop to retain 70-80% of it's capacity after 5 years? To still have ~70% after 10 years? You also think that the battery isn't replaceable in a worst case scenario(~$5k with the return of the old battery)?
News: Laptop and cell phone batteries are drive hard compared to a electric car's battery. The leaf has some issues over the Tesla, because a Tesla uses liquid cooling in it's battery.
For example, the most 'wear' that a LiIon gets is when it's charged from 90% to 100%. EVs 'generally' redefine 100% to actually be 90% of battery capacity in order to protect the battery. This increases it's lifespan significantly.

Re:NO, NO, NO, NO, this is a BAD idea
1. Nuclear devices are ineffective in space.
Not the case. See Project Orion.
will have to use them early to nudge the object onto a different path
This would be the case for any asteroid defense and we're already capable of detecting and track most objects large enough to cause serious concern. With more investment, we'll only be getting better and be able to detect smaller and smaller objects.
banned by multiple international agreements
Banned due to potential for a space arms race over a potential war. Doesn't apply in case of joint global asteroid defense.
We don't put nuclear power generators in space for a reason
We can and regularly do send nuclear power generators into space, including fully-featured nuclear reactors. In related the news, we haven't all died yet.
4. Nuclear devices are pretty fragile devices & 5. Nuclear fission devices require regular maintenance
Just send many smaller ones. Even if some don't work, all you want to achieve is deflection. Pro tip: when not required, don't park the things in space. Keep them on the ground and launch them should the need arise. Any asteroid early-detection program gives notice years in advance (e.g. we learned about the close pass of 99942 Apophis a good 2 decades in advance).
6. An accidental malfunction would be a SERIOUS problem for the near by earth
Same problem applies for weapons stored on Earth. Fix is simple: keep the device disarmed and design in fail-safes. This has already been done. I 7 decades of nuclear weaponry, number of inadvertent nuclear detonations, even in case of accidental weapons drops: zero.

ClarityRay defeats it & can't to hosts (clarityray makes browser addons DETECTED + BLOCKED via native browser methods).
AdBlock adds complexity/room for breakdown/exploit + from a slow mode of operation (usermode = more messagepassing overheads vs. hosts in kernelmode).

Re:Good and Bad
Examples of abuses this is to prevent in the future?
First, Comcast throttles Netflix as it competes with their own services, Netflix then is forced into paying Comcast for a connection (rather than their hosted proxies that worked for years):
http://qz.com/256586/the-insid...The FCC specifically declined to intervene in this. From their published rationale:
As discussed, Internet traffic exchange agreements have historically been and will continue to be commercially negotiated. We do not believe that it is appropriate or necessary to subject arrangements for Internet traffic exchange (which are subsumed within broadband Internet access service) to the rules we adopt today.
Different example please?
Then Verizon decides to hop on the bandwagon, Netflix is forced into buying a connection from Verizon too, then Verizon is still throttling them:
http://www.extremetech.com/com...I buy a 100Mbps connection from a local data center. Explain to me how that's different than "throttling."
If they're really getting less than their contract provides for, couldn't they just use the courts?
Why do you need the FCC?
Netflix pays for internet access already (through L3 I believe)
I requested them to send me traffic, and I am on Verizon.
Verizon has NO right to throttle traffic that I as a customer of theirs has requested.
The throttling was so bad, I wasn't even able to play 320P video over my 75Mbit symmetric connection.
They did the same thing to Youtube, constant buffering breaks in videos. This is not what the internet is supposed to be, I pay for a huge pipe, I should not be punished for trying to use 1/10 of it to watch a video.
What evidence do you have that Netflix video content is uniquely being throttled? That if I were to host my video website on L3, it wouldn't have the same connection issues?
Keep in mind Netflix is a majority of Internet traffics, so symmetric pipes are necessarily impossible.
If the FCC was really going to help, isn't that a failure of the premise of Title II regulations in the first place?

Re:Interesting experiment but deeply flawed
Also, in some countries it's illegal to harvest power from ambient electromagnetic radiation, like GB as it says in the comments section here, in order to prevent people from leeching power off of power lines, antennas of radio stations and what have you. While that doesn't stop you from charging your AA batteries for free, you might have a hard time selling gear that relies on harvested power in these countries.

Re:American Hero
Well, among other things, he revealed that:
1) The NSA intercepts and stores virtually all communications sent on electronic networks anywhere it can reach. Not just metadata. In the case of phone calls, they also speech->text them and make that archive searchable.
http://rt.com/news/172284-nsa-...
http://www.globalresearch.ca/n...
http://www.theguardian.com/wor...2) The NSA constantly works at ways to break into encrypted communications, including hacking into the VPNs of supposedly friendly governments.
http://www.spiegel.de/internat...
3) The NSA listens to the cell calls of friendly foreign leaders. (hopefully, also, unfriendly ones).
http://www.spiegel.de/internat...
4) The NSA may have worked to weaken encryption standards in order to make their task easier.
http://www.theverge.com/2013/9...
http://www.scientificamerican....5) The NSA has physically broken into the fiber plants of major public Internet companies (ie. Google), supposedly without their knowledge, in order to steal data sent only internally.
http://www.extremetech.com/int...
6) Major Internet companies, and all telcos, have willingly shared much or all of their client's communications with the NSA.
http://www.bloomberg.com/bw/ar...
7) The NSA and foreign intelligence agencies share data in order to evade domestic spying restrictions.
https://www.techdirt.com/artic...
8) The NSA has hacked into at least one major supplier of SIM cards, in order to spy on calls made from the phones made with them.

Re:"stealing just like stealing anything else"
And this is the problem with industry thinking. It is NOT stealing.
In that case, NSA, Google, Facebook et al. collecting our data aren't "stealing" anything either.
They are NOT property law.
Distinction without difference. The infringer gets something for nothing — like a thief. The copyright holder loses something — like a theft-victim.
The term "intellectual property" is an intentional obfuscation
Had the Commandments been the "living and breathing document", that certain folks like to pretend the US Constitution is, something like "thou shall not enjoy artwork against the artist's wishes" would've been found in it by now.
Ideas can NOT be owned.
Why not?! Inasmuch as anything can be owned, why can't ideas be? The deed on my house is just as much a "piece of paper" as anything granting rights to a song. If you can download a song against its owner's wishes, why can't you move into my home while I'm away and change the locks? It is (or ought to be) just as socially (un)acceptable...
They do not exist for the benefit of the copyright holder. They exist for the benefit of society as a whole. [...] Read Article 1, Section 8 of the US Constitution.
There is nothing in the article affirming your Socialistic view, that my idea exists for "society as a whole". All the section says on the matter is: "To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries;"
So, you said an untruth (most likely, lied): the Constitution acknowledges the benefit the authors may derive from their writings and discoveries and leaves it to Congress to develop a system to reward them. Which Congress did — long ago — and it is referred to as "intellectual property".
