Urban MySQL vs. Urban PostgreSQL
Interesting. As a guy who's been a die-hard PostgreSQL for a number of years, and who recently accepted a job doing hardcore MySQL administration, I was dreading it, because everyone knows MySQL has bad transaction management, horrible administration nightmares, and is only good for developers.
And I'm sure MySQL DBAs all know PostgreSQL is slow, bloated, and is only good for huge database rollouts.
Except, well. You get the gist. I'm replying to this article because I now know first-hand that both camps are getting a lot of it wrong.
I've written up what began as a final in-depth studied proof that MySQL wasn't ready for the corporate environment (because I'm a PostgreSQL guy, see?) but ended up reluctantly having to conclude MySQL is slightly more ready for the corporate environment than PostgreSQL!
The writeup is on a wiki, so feel free to register and add your own experience. Please be ready to back up your opinions with facts. -
Yawn. News at 11 again.
It isn't news anymore. This is one of a thousand stories that tell the story of a slow decline. The United States has neared its completion of Project Mainland China, wherein the Constitution is replaced by Mao's little red book.
I don't see anyone really denying that this is where we're going. The sad part is that the mainstream really doesn't see it as a problem. We're starting to get used to the idea that hey, maybe this Fascist Communism thing really is the ticket for us. Just so long as we don't use the words Fascist and Communist. Say safety and War on Terrorism, and everyone thinks it's just nifty keen.
Don't mod this post. It's just (albeit accurate) nihilistic sarcastic bitter cynicism, and deserves neither a 0 nor better than a 1. -

Re:Neat and cool, but . . .BUT what will it take
Problems with Dell products and support may not be universal, but they are definitely not unusual.

What -- No Milkshakes???I make some damn good milkshakes, not out of Ice Cream, but frozen fruit and milk... from faemalia dot org's Pina Carrata page, I tell you how to make what I call "Pina Carrota."
It's based on the interesting realisation that carrots taste a lot like coconut when mixed up in a sweet mixture (believe it or not).
Pre-installation:
0. Put large glasses into the freezer
1. Put carrots, pineapple and juice into freezer until juice/pineapple is extremely slushy & carrots frozen
Ingredients:
1/4 cup frozen baby peeled carrots
(following items can be had by buying canned pineapple)
2 cups near-frozen pineapples
1/2 cup near-frozen pineapple juice
1/4 cup Malibu coconut rum
2 cups milk (Lactaid works very well!)
1 tbsp honeyProcedure:
Put frozen pineapple and juice into blender
Put frozen baby peeled carrots into blender
Put 2 cups of milk in blender
Blend the ingredients as well as you can, trying to reduce chunks. You may need to push chunks down toward the blades. Be careful and don't ruin your blender or pushing instrument.
Once blent, add Malibu coconut rum and blend more
If the milkshake is juicy enough that there is a spinning vortex to the blender blades, then add the 1 tbsp honey into the vortex
Note: The same caveats and warnings as in StrawberryMilkshakes apply here, especially allergies to honey and/or tricks and tips.
I also have Strawberry and Strawberry/Blueberry recipes there. They're similar.

These Modern TimesSo I guess I've been slashdotted. Sorry to y'alls that tried to get to my site earlier this evening when I was being hammered. My web servers are holding up just fine, it's that darn narrow DSL pipe that isn't helping us out.
The funny thing is, when I figured out why my girlfriend couldn't browse the web anymore, I told her about what a great honor this is, and she's just angry 'cuz she can't check out her own web page chat board! I swear, these webmasters are all so self-centered. She went off in a huff to watch TV, and now she's making fun of me because I'm posting to slashdot.
Use the mirror, mentioned above, and if you want to do non-MouseTest stuff, try PhiloVivero dot Com for a while. I'm moving out of static HTML and into Wiki anyway, so going to my wiki and be amazed. Source code at SourceForge.
In response to some, there are no typos on that page. I really do mean 18 months of age or older. And if you're not buddhist, you can't view the page. Also, if you are considering building a working Star Wars replica spacecraft out of AOL CDs and $500,000, then all restrictions (except the DMCA) don't apply to you!
