Re:It's hopeless.
But even if they had a good director, they can't just undo the Prequels. They're already out there, and they've already ruined Star Wars.
Some of the fan edits actually make the prequels decent movies.

Re:Dune
OK, here's a link which tells you how to get it, at the risk it gets slashdotted: Dune, Spicediver fanedit v2. There is much else to like at the fanedit site.

Adywon
You know what? I don't even need these.
The saint known by me as "St. Adywon" has cured all my original trilogy needs. Tons of graphics fixes (light sabers cmoother coming out, laser blasts all fixed), enhancements(better space landscapes, burning on reentry, death star scene makes sense now), audio cleaned up, cool stuff added, etc. I mean this guy does Star Wars right. Even better than Lucas
here are the various download links. For best quality burn it to a dual layered DVD, should be DVD-9. Make sure to get the NTSC\PAL version as needed.

This is the DL DVD NTSC

The download took us 3 days, we used this JDownloader software for it. http://jdownloader.org/download
This is seriously worth it! You can even watch side by side to see all the fixes. Adywon is my hero. -
Re:Hmmm...
The miniseries stuck more closely to the story, but the acting was bloody wooden.
Well, for the archetype of wooden acting, just look at Thufir Hawat (Freddie Jones) in Lynch's movie. It's a wooden performance in the petrified forest class.
Actually, I enjoyed both Lynch's movie and the TV miniseries. There are also some fan-edit versions of the movie which merge footage from the Lynch cut and the Smithee cut with deleted scenes from the DVD release, and resequence them. The fanedit by Spicediver is highly recommended, for instance http://fanedit.org/598/. -
Re:Obviously the template
There are a number of fan edits out there. My personal favorite is The Balance of the Force. It manages to decrease the exponation of Jar-Jar while still giving a cohesive story. By "jamming" the non-human voices it is also able to significantly improve the quality of the plot. Unlike the original movie, this one is actually worth the time.
