Re:WotC's buyout of TSR.
Slightly offtopic but:
The Story of WotC and D&D is now legendary among me and my gamer-friends. D&D's new shape, rules, and print-run are so far superior to the 2nd edition that D&D is having a massive revival in a group that has rolled our collective eyes skyward, and sighed heavily when a non-gamer would say, "Oh, is that like D&D?" when confronted with our hobby (to which we always answered "yes" because they didn't really want to hear our opinions of that game anyway)
Anyway, now with FASA dying and selling ShadowRun (a game I still love, despite the dull financial grind of buying the same material in 2 different covers "for different editions"). Me and my friends cross our fingers, and hope that in 2 years time, WizKids (who is purchasing the IP for ShadowRun) will show what care and love can do to a rapidly tiring game system. . . Just like WotC did.
(As a second aside, from somebody who played magic for a while, and got sick of it, and spent several months amazed at the disposable income, and swore at WotC for their brilliant scheme... it's weird to be lauding WotC for anything, much less reviving D&D) -
Re:What?
Think about this: corporations don't vote--people do.
I think it's more complex than that. Corporations, especially in the music industry, *control* what people *think*. At least, they *can* do it. By selecting certain genre as "top 10", by presenting a 16-year playboy as an feminin, they restrict and somehow impose a view on the world. It's showbusiness, man. People may vote, yeah... But more than that, they vote for what they think is right, or for "the least harm". I don't follow us politics very well, but I can say one thing: there is not a single political party that is even close to reflect my political opinions here in canada. If the public actually gave a shit, they would take a peek at campaign finance records (which are generally publically available) and figure out who was on the take. The problem is voter apathy.
It's the same problem. Everybody know the US screwed up in Vietnam. Everybody knows the FBI screwed up in waco. Everybody knows Watergate wasn't just a one-timer. But it's no big deal because the big boys of the news keep it forgotten. As long as the people tune in and drop the struggle, you're done for.Remember, only governments have armies.
Well, let's see. Ever heard of Securicor? Brinks? I'm sure every major corporation has a private "security service" of their own, or hire another. You would probably be interested in Shadowrun a role-playing game which storyline is in the 2050s: the USA basically broke apart, and the corporations rule, and have been recognized as extra-territorial entities (i.e. seperate nations).I find this a very interesting concept.

Re:Is it just me
According to the press release, the whole corporation is part of the deal.

Re:Shadowrun handbook link
is 404! Not found.
Try taking the "www.slashdot.org/" out of it :-)
www.FASA.com might work better. -
Bad linkThe link below is not valid: urged me to get the "Shadowrun" handbooks.

clarification
FYI FASA itself wasn't purchased by Microsoft. Microsoft only purchased the computer games division - FASA Interactive Technologies (FIT) and it's parent company VWEG (makers of the Virtual World pods). FASA was a major shareholder in them, but FASA themselves is not owned by Microsoft. Though they did just announce a deal to be acquired by Decipher so they can become a bigger force in the gaming industry. So M$ may have the rights to the computer game versions of FASA's games, but at least the paper versions won't be tainted by Redmond. I do agree though that the chance of MW3 or any game based on a FASA license being ported to Linux now is extremely slim as is a port to any OS not made by M$. It's really a shame though as I'd bet that games based on Battletech such as MW3 and the Shadowrun universe (cyberpunk with magic) would probably be popular with Linux users.

Drek!
Wow... And to think... When I used to play Cyberpunk and Shadowrun I always *dreamed* about one day having a SPU running in my crainum with a data port so that I could "Jack-In" to the Matrix. Woe is me. I'm not going to be the first. Where can I sign up to be the first person to be *permantly* implanted? Think about the possibilities... Never need that little black book anymore. Never have to worry about cramming for an exam. Just upload baby! Wait till the stuff like in the ShadowTech book is available for all the rest of the Drek-heads like me. I'll have to invest in that $ to NuYen converter I've been dreaming about. *sigh* Back to reality...
