How much of this is the vast technical resources Alphabet / Google have accumulated over the years needing something to do. Everyone wants to make their mark and instead of incremental improvements, they rely on massive change to stake out a claim. Youtube's problem is largely chasing dollars and wanting to rebrand themselves as TV instead fo what made Youtube great.
First off, I love my Macs. I have a couple MacBook Pros and the system is one of the best I've used. Unfortunately, its the Operating System that really seals it for me. The hardware on my MacBooks is terrible for the generation. The keyboards are terrible, they're extremely un-servicable and un-expandable. - the most redeeming qualities are the battery life and the touchpad. I appreciate the qualities of the walled garden atmosphere of the iPad, but sometimes I just need a real system.
There are plenty of good projects wherever you happen to be right now. Schools (public and private), libraries, senior centers are all always looking for volunteers to help make their environments better places for those who use their services. Sure its not as impressive as going overseas to do some work, but it also has many headaches that the overseas visit will not.
Greenpeace just like any other group with a political agenda (like NRA, Sierra Club, PETA, MADD) has to provide the shock value to get its point across. How many more pieces of paper would be wasted if it weren't for the ability to send email or post on grandma's wall. Sending or writing a check is nearly extinct. Sure we have a heck of a lot plugged in, but servers are becoming exponentially more efficient as time progresses. With technologies such as cloud computing and virtualization, the peak load of infrastructure has promise to slowly decrease over the next decade. Remember the internet, as far reaching as it is, is still a relatively young technology that is getting its legs under it. Give it time, and the cost of powering all of those servers slowly moves companies to reduce their consumption or supplement with sustainable green power.
Hard drives are sealed. They should in theory be safe from the destruction. At worst, you'd have to remove the drive backplane from the chassis of the drive and flip it over to clean the back side. YMMV and it depends on the model of the drive.
Compare modern games, especially MMORPGS and the like. Every character can choose their own looks within set parameters. I've yet to see too many 'black' characters in races that have those skintone options in WoW (Humans, Dwarves, and to a lesser extent Blood Elves) created by the users themselves. Perhaps part of the reasoning for having less black main characters are that the players themselves choose not to play those characters; they have less appeal.
I don't believe that its completely done by humans. I look at the evidence out there and come to my own conclusions. Do I think that humans have some active part in this? Absolutely. Do I think that we're the only ones raising the temperature on the planet? Hell no.
Yet *$ and other franchises sell their coffee at similar temperatures, and it doesn't cause any problems. The truth of the matter is it increases sales BECAUSE people don't want luke-warm coffee.
They will not post what they disagree with. Try telling any green environmental lefty that Ethanol is a bad thing and show them why, and they turn their nose saying, "But, but, but, but its GREEN!"
Good find man. I think I'll post it in a few of my discussion nodes.
Once the efficiency of photovoltaic cells increases and wind power gets broader acceptance, I'll agree with you. Unfortunately the undesired side effects of both technologies leads to them being less efficient than traditional means of sourcing power in the coal and oil combustion plants. Unfortunately, even the most green places have problems adopting the technologies due to overhead costs, as well as unintended consequences.
Photovoltaics have come a long way in the last twenty years, but creating them have many side effects such as silica pollution in the manufacturing process. They require a large amount of room to generate significant energy. They only produce significant amounts of energy at peak ten or so hours a day, necessitating the use of battery cells to store the energy for other times. The batteries themselves have huge environmental impact when being disposed of, leaking acid and lead into aquifers.
Wind generators are large and unsightly, to the point where US Senator Kennedy (D-MA) has blocked erecting wind structures near Martha's Vineyard because they would spoil the views. Similar opposition have been placed on wind structures in the valleys of Vermont's picturesque ski villages, because local businesses fear the wind generators would entice their vacationers to go elsewhere. Again, similar to Solar power, they are limited to being able to generate power when the wind is blowing.
I'm not saying either is a bad option, especially when used together. The real answer is that we must wean ourselves slowly off of the current usage so that more efficient technologies can advance the other possibilities. A combination of lowering consumption and increasing efficiency of new power technologies can get us where we need to be.
I say probably. However, I'd also wager that the ICE trains in Germany which are purely electric and can carry 1000 people at 300kph are most efficient.
Unless they're being powered via solar, nuclear or wind technologies, I'd be willing to presume that its not as environmentally friendly as one may think.
You can't delay something that was cancelled. Sun was just delaying the expectation for people clamoring for the new UltraSparc IV. I can't wait to get my hands on some at work. We could consolidate some of our Java servers together in our testing environments at a lower cost than buying more of the BIG IRON systems. I'll be curious to see what systems they're going to wrap around these processors. Are the current lines going to get faster CPUs? Are they going to create whole new lines of Servers?
Part of the problem is too many people are 'casual' Linux users. Hell, I'm a Solaris admin, and Windows is still my primary desktop. Thanks to applications like Outlook, I'm permantly stuck on the Windows interface (and yes, I've used Evolution plenty of times, but there are some plugins that my company uses in Exchange that Evolution can't use, therefore, I'm stuck with Outlook).
So essentially, everyone's a street sam or street shaman. Great, the two classes I didn't enjoy playing (I was much more into the Decking / Rigging parts of the game).
I'll still pick this game up. Looks like a blast, and it also appears they're producing it for Windows Vista.
Actually not true. It classifies them based on their stat 'preference' for lack of a better term. As far as the game is concerned, Thrall is a Paladain, however Cairne is classified as a Druid. The UC leader (can't think of her name) is either priest or mage (can't remember).
One thing that you see over and over is the persecution of the other races by the Humans. The Humans mistakenly see themselves as the premier race of the game. They have made allies with the three other 'most human' races out of convience. They're mostly lead by the 'Light' (which is an allusion to Christian religion) in their actions, and see anyone who stands in their way as defying the light. Look at the book by Shadowpriest Allister (Holy Bologna, What the Light Doesn't Want You To Know). The Undead have found that the Light is a sham to give the Humans a reason to fight the Horde on behalf of the true enemies, the Burning Crusaide (see the Stratholme, live side for more evidence).
Look at the way the Scarlet Cruisade attacks the Forsaken though. There are plenty of quests in the Scarlet Monastary where you see the evil that humans do. There's the quest lines starting in the torture chamber with the stolen ring. You can also see the Forsaken many times still have feelings for their living relatives, despite having their hearts ripped out. Some are hopeless romantics.
There are evil undead, but they're also working towards a greater good. Look at the Hero in Eastern Plaguelands. He's trying to drive out the non-Forsaken Undead, essentially solo.

I tend to build them. I'm building a Ryzen 2700x right now.

Everyone will be skipping Windows 8. Seems like every other version of Windows is determined by boneheads with a barely functional magic 8 ball.
From another of us with low UID and remembering chips and dips, thanks for your years running the site. Good luck in the future Rob.

Better to let this get broader audience than the privacy concerned geeks of /.

This is a bunch of fud designed by the people with a vested interested in continued funding towards global warming research.

This was leaked out earlier today on all the digg site as the viral campaign for Halo 3. Its similar to the ilovebees site from the Halo 2 launch.

In this case, with the Churches, Paladains and Priests, I'd say its a rather fair allegation.

As a small aside. If you check out Thrall's 'class' in World of Warcraft, he's classified as a Paladain.
