Tomboy is not 50MB, the whole Mono framework is that much, Tomboy is relatively small. If you use F-Spot or Beagle, Mono runtime is installed anyway.

And if you dont(most people), it's not installed. It's available in the repositories if you want it, why crap it into the base install?

Debian had reason to include Tomboy instead of Gnote. Also Tomboy does not have Applet support, which is why Debian wants it in the Gnome install instead of Gnote

Gnote 0.3.0 released 2009-04-29 adds applet support. Why use Tomboy at all now?

It's more accurate to say that WebKit is mostly open source. Apparently, it uses closed-source binary blobs based around private APIs and OS internals for various functionality under Mac OS X. (This used to include such vital things as font rendering.) Personally, I think this is probably a violation of the LGPL - it only allows you to use the library from closed-source code, and modifying the library so that it's dependent on closed-source code (other than the OS libraries) is still forbidden.

Flash is NOT an open standard!

I have been using Inkscape on OS X a lot lately, and it works pretty well; there is an Inkscape.app so when you open an SVG file in the Finder, it will open X11 and then open the file with Inkscape.

The unix binary is somewhere inside the .app (which is really just a special type of directory) so you can call it from the command line. This is useful because you can convert SVG files to PNG or PS via the command line with Inkscape. This is really nice for me since I have been making a lot of technical illustrations lately; I do them all in Inkscape's GUI and then I run a Makefile to batch convert them into PNGs or PS files for inclusion into documentation, web pages, etc. Someone also got sponsorship from Google's Summer of Code to work on auto line routing, e.g. for connecting pieces of a schematic; I am really looking forward to this.

There are a few minor glitches; the most noticeable to me is that Inkscape.app won't open a file from the Finder if Inkscape is already running.

...is the "Ubuntu spatial" mode hacked into Nautilus (and turned on by default) just a few days before 5.04 went gold, which makes Ubuntu's file and folder management different from every other Gnome implementation out there. Why was this done? Seems Mark Shuttleworth decided by fiat that this new way is better. People are not amused.

As a OS X user, I would also say anything that requires X11 is not a native OS X application. With no core OS X technology support (little things like colorsync, quicktime, etc), Gimp will really never take off on OS X. I personally will stick to using photoshop.


After playing with OSS a while you realize that more than one person usually wants what you want, provided its a reasonably common problem you're addressing.

GTK2 is being ported to OSX (without needing X11.

Hub of abiword fame is workign on an X-less Gtk+ for MacOS.
