In an HTTP URL, it's not always obvious what parts are parameters that are being passed on (e.g. credentials) or just location-information.

Example (using mod_rewrite)... in the following URL, are there any "credentials" or not?

The thing is... you can't tell... maybe it's some file called "file342" in some directory called "james".... maybe it's passing off "james" and "file342" as some parameters (login/pwd set) to some dynamic code. But, from the outside, it's difficult to tell.

Could someone guess or figure out such as URL by himself?

In this specific case...

If the file was http://www.filefactory.com/4e32894lots_of_random_stuff389472394832 you can claim no one could discover it by chance. What if the URL was http://www.filefactory.com/leaked_photos ?

If the URL was of this second type (where the content is self-evident by reading the URL and there are no signs of "credentials" being pass on), would it THEN be legal to link to it?

What are the EXACT criteria for defining some URL as "impossible to discover by a person" or not? What if I link to some copyrighted material which is located at an URL which is "possible to be discovered by a person without my help"; am I then still infringing or not?

Wrong. As some other posters have already shown, google happily indexes and searches FileFactory.

No it doesn't. FF blocks indexing. See http://www.filefactory.com/robots.txt

Google indexes links to FF it finds on other sites. You can't just get a file listing of uploads to FF from FF (well, maybe with a court order).

You actually want to use not short words but extremely common words, since they are more likely to be easily remembered. 2000 was chosen because of the XKCD about this password generation method,

Well, yes, of course, I was just being lazy. So I downloaded a list of the most common words in English (about 200,000) and cleaned it up, removing all those with any punctuation and then narrowed it down to only words between 3-7 letters. Then I took the first 20,000 of those.

You can download the file here. They're sorted by frequency, so look at the last 10 with tail. See, 2000 is just ridiculous. I do appreciate the xkcd since it mirrors what I'd been arguing for a while. More people listen to comics than to me :-) But I wish he hadn't chosen such a small dictionary as an example, since it makes the concept so easy to criticise unjustifiably...

Loved this show since I was a boy in the 1970's (John Pertwee, & Tom Baker era here)... & rediscovered it when Christopher Eccleston took over in 2005! He was great, but, the "new Doctor", David Tennant IS THE ULTIMATE imo, to date (longest running sci-fi ("the literature of change") seties there is since 1962 in fact!)
