Last "Hackers On Planet Earth" Conference In July
NewYorkCountryLawyer writes "The Last H.O.P.E. ('Hackers on Planet Earth') Conference is set for July 18-20, 2008, at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. The organizers have announced their supplemental speaker list, adding on to the initial list. Topics will include 'Crafting a Security-Enhanced Wikipedia,' 'VoIP (in)security: Italians Do It Better,' 'AntiSocial Networking: Vulnerabilities in Social Nets,' 'SWF and the Malware Tragedy,' 'Simulating the Universe on Supercomputers,' and my personal favorite, 'RIAA Litigations: How the Tech Community Can Help.'"
The "Last" conference is set for last year? Ironic.
Sigh, I really don't feel like shifting that old time machine I got from eBay out from the basement.

is when they auction off the attendees' credit cards, passports, and drivers' licenses. As the goods are previewed on a 60" plasma TV, generally you hear backhanded compliments along the lines of "hey, that's got a better picture of me than the real thing."
I'm glad they had such a good lineup last year, but what's happening in 2008?
For those of you that can't attend, there will be an internet radio station (which I am helping put together) from and about the conference (details here: http://radio.hope.net/ ), with interviews and news and other bits from the con.

Set up honeypots to entrap the RIAA into sending bogus notices. Thoroughly document this and make the results available to those defending themselves against RIAA suits (and to those pursuing class action suits against the RIAA).
Also try to trick them into breaking into and/or DOSing bittorent trackers (preferably ones not being used to infringe any RIAA copyrights).

2007... it's all about hacking time
Conference is set for July 18-20, 2007, at the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City.
So this was last year then?
And apparently it will be held in the past: July 18-20, 2007.
On a related note, we now know that it was likely due to administrative mismanagement that led to the end of the conference.
There is an obvious time wrap in the summary.
They have been VERY careful about not explicitly saying that this is the final hope. They are just calling this year's conference "The Final Hope".
I guess, we had no hope for 11 months already...
In Soviet Washington the swamp drains you.
It's just a jump to the left...
And a damned bad editor...
I mean really...I am disappointed with the hacking community now big time. Master time travel and all you can come up with is hold a conference complaining about things? Paradox be damned its worth it to try and fix the unmitigated disasters in freedom that have been going on the last 20 years or so.
The only change I can believe in is what I find in my couch cushions.
The trackers just need to start giving them some fake peers. Maybe give them ONLY fake peers if they're the one guy who has 800 torrents, but which isn't sharing...

2007?
You're a little late.
'SWF and the Malware Tragedy'
Sounds like a sequel to 'The Net'.
Wow... hacking in to the past... I wonder if I'm elite enough to attend...? :)
"AntiSocial Networking"... ...Yeah, think the slashdot crowd has that covered.
Elope.... after they grep, touch, poke, and head and tail each other in NICE ways....
Previously: "Linux... Toward the Sunrise..." Now: "Linux... Toward the-- No, now, part of Every Sunrise"
And what will it be called ? "The Future Hope" ? "The Next Hope" ? "The Hope Strikes Back" ? "The Once and Future Hope" ? "Infinite Hope" ?
But seriously, now that Hotel Pennsylvannia will be turned into millionaire's housing, maybe this thing can be moved to a cheaper and more accessible part of the country. Especially in light of the economy, we should focus on a place that is central and is a big Greyhound hub. Maybe a place where there are a lot of urban ruins, and it would be really cheap to rent some sort of big bare building like a parking garage. Having everyone all camp out might be a bit of a stretch, I don't know if the hacker crowd is ready to woodstock it yet, but if there were a Motel 6 or Days Inn within walking distance for the weak that might suffice.
The list of talks and speakers looks really good, even better than last year, when I really regretted not attending after talking to some people who did. I wish I were going, but even re-examining my money and schedule, it looks like I won't be.
Perhaps some people could get together to organize a complementary conference, to be held in January (cheaper travel and most time separation from the real Hope). I suggest we put it in some place like Albequerque or Los Cruces, which might be bearable at that time of year, and is generally cheap.

Loved this show since I was a boy in the 1970's (John Pertwee, & Tom Baker era here)... & rediscovered it when Christopher Eccleston took over in 2005! He was great, but, the "new Doctor", David Tennant IS THE ULTIMATE imo, to date (longest running sci-fi ("the literature of change") seties there is since 1962 in fact!)
In honor of this series, I did a screensaver (of fairly "advanced design" (for a screensaver that is)) of this series' "introduction sequence" (where the tardis is vectoring thru time etc. et al) PLUS, other tardis in flight clips too!

What the fuck is this shit?
Are they going to call next year's conference "A New H.O.P.E" ?
What a depressingly stupid machine.
I have only done this once before.
It's a free screensaver that plays back the introduction sequence that every Doctor Who episode 2005 through present has which shows Dr. Who's tardis time travelling ship in flight through various scenes from the show. It is done very well after having tried it myself, after having read its review by Dr. Who forums members. The poster whom the author of the post about Dr. Who was replying to somebody who mentioned Dr. Who and apparently he posted that screensaver in reply to he is what. Reading is fundamental, try it sometime. I am glad I did, because I like Dr. Who and that is a good screensaver.
Pep Boys doesn't carry them.. does anyone have a flux capacitor? I need a flux capacitor people!
They've hacked our timeline? These guys are good.
If my company is making me choose 1 conference, should I choose HOPE or DEFCON? HOPE seems less expensive and has more "mainstream" keynote speakers, but DEFCON seems to have much MUCH more substance. Any tips for someone who has not attended either and must choose?

Yeah, that's the one. For some odd reason it makes more sense to me that the last extension should be honored, not the first. I'm too used to tarred gzips where the final extension (we'll disregard magic numbers for the moment) is the significant one.
