    flyboy writes "In a similar vein to the remakes of the Origin's Ultima series games reported in 2001 and 2004 a group of Wing Commander fans has remade Wing Commander: Privateer. Unlike the Ultima remakes, the Privateer remake is finished at version 1.0 with 3d graphics and the whole storyline. For the new kids on the block, WC:Privateer was a much loved trading game similar to the more venerable Elite, which appears also to be in the process of a remake. As a linux fan I was most happy with the remake's use of GPL 3d engine software and release of Linux, Macintosh and Windows versions. See Screenshots here."

The two games stand as pioneers of the outdoor combat sub-genre of first person shooters and of all multiplayer games, influencing Halo and UT2004 among other games. Tribes 1 was the first multiplayer-only shooter, whereas Tribes 2 extended the core unique elements of its predecessor to a greater scale and depth. With this [previously mentioned on Slashdot] free release, VUG is stirring up anticipation for the release of the third Tribes game, Tribes: Vengeance."     Thanks to Blue's News for the info that a PC demo of Homeworld 2 is now available, offering "a sample of Relic's now-gold space-based RTS sequel... [including] a tutorial, two solo missions and a pair of multiplayer maps." Mirrors of the 141mb demo include Gamer's Hell, IGN Downloads, Worthplaying, and a BitTorrent links via FileRush and GameTab.

    Thanks to several readers for pointing out the PC demo for Activision's World War II FPS Call Of Duty has been released - there are mirrors at Gamer's Hell, 3D Gamers, and a BitTorrent via FileRush, and Blue's News, as well as providing a longer list of mirrors, clarifies: "The 174 MB demo offers the single-player Burnville mission from Infinity Ward's upcoming shooter." This public release follows last night's controversy over the demo's exclusivity to FilePlanet, and Activision's subsequent change of heart, following a petition from many of the major game sites.

The 322mb download includes "...completely new code for lag compensation, hit detection, physics... and a fully integrated UI", and there are multiple download mirrors listed on the official site, plus a BitTorrent link from Filerush.com - good to see there's still some quality Quake III mods, even after Epic's financial inducements to mod Unreal Tournament instead.
