Re:Crack vs. Foss
Then use TUGZip, IZArc, PeaZip, Filzip, ZipGenuis or a dozen other free compression utilities. I'm sure one of them will be to your liking.
I have personally used TUGZip and IZArc for years and think they are both fantastic pieces of software. I have been meaning to also give PeaZip a try, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Filzip is another
http://www.filzip.com/
I've been using Filzip for a while and it takes care of all my archival needs. -
Just use Filzip
Or you could just, you know, use Filzip instead.
Filzip includes shell integration, handles just about every compression format (including
.rar, .tar/.tar.gz, and .cab), and unlike WinZip, it s 100% free as in beer. No fooling, no mucking around with a feature-deprived free version. Just grab it and go. -
Re:No worries, DOA viruses
My old school installed FilZip on all student laptops. That could open rar files (not to mention a ton of other formats).

first ten on Windows
I install these programs first on new Windows machines.
- firefox
- cygwin (including emacs, ncftp, wget, openssh, grep, sed, and other favorites)
- putty
- ntfilemon/ntregmon
- Java2 SDK
- winamp
- VideoLAN Client
- wget
- WinPT/gpg
- Filzip
VNC, Emacs for Windows, VMWare, CDEx, Vorbis Tools, DaemonTools follow. I like Photoshop but as long as it's crippled (currency watermarks) and activated I'll never buy another license for it.

Re:Forget 7-Zip
Just tossing out another free alternative
FilZip
I usually have both FilZip and 7-Zip installed as FilZip was missing a few of the more obscure compression methods that 7zip supports.
But FilZip has a much cleaner interface and it's what I recommend to anyone who asks.
Plus, it's free. -
My Top N.
Besides what was stated in the news story, and what is grabbed on Windows Update...

Free zip, rar, etc... util
PuTTY
Best SSH client for windows, and it's free
WinSCP
SFTP/SCP Client, free
Crimson Editor
Text Editor / IDE, supports color-coding source code and such. Very handy.
Mozilla
FireFox is nice, but I need a decent mail app and I like Moz for that.
Media Player Classic
Best. App. Ever. As long as you've got the codec installed, this handy thing will play the media files for you. This includes QuickTime, RealPlayer, and even Flash movies.
Nimo Codec Pack
A compilation of video and audio codecs as well as stream switchers, extra directshow filters, and nifty bits. Rather than hunting down individual codecs for XviD, 3vix, OGG, etc... this pack does it all in one operation. -

BEST ZIP PROGRAM FOR WINDOWS
The best zip program for Windows is FilZip. IT'S FREE!!!! It also supports ace, arc, arj, cab, gz, lha, jar, rar, tar, AND it has strong encryption (AES)

Re:7-zip
I've used 7-Zip... it sucks donkey cock in terms of interface design. I've been using FilZip as of lately. It handles basically any file format flawlessly (even RAR and ACE!) with a nice interface that doesn't suck as much cock.

for every shareware there is an equal freeware...
At least that's what I've found to be true. If I can get all the software I want in freeware versions, why pay for a shareware version? Sometimes it takes some searching to find a great freeware product, but it is always more satisfying to me to find something free and usefull rather than simply shelling out for the ubiquitous version that does the same thing (although sometimes is actually inferior). When I install a new Windows OS for someone, I always download Filzip for them, rather than Winzip with its anoying nag screen. I also try to teach people about the Gimp and they are always amazed that they can have a Photoshop equivalent for free.
Also, the great HTML-Kit, VirtualDub, Blender, and many others are great, professional apps that happen to be free.
You can even run a portal like Slashdot on freeware (using Slash or MaxWebPortal).
