Re:This will invite more unjust lawsuits
And what about sites that sell malware as tangible goods, like anybody stocking Sony CDs?
Or companies that merely manufacture malware, for example first4internet, but don't actually host it on their site? -
Let First 4 Internet know what you think
I think the entire community should 'congratulate' them on their actions. (Use a plausible business enquiry for the subject, so they have to open it)

Re:I just thought of something
Nope, wasn't an accident. Ceri Coburn of First4Internet really is that incompetent. He only got as far as he did because people are a bit too helpful.

Re:This Rootkit Not Affecting Mac
Yea because putting OSX on an intel chip will automaticly give OSX a regiestry, and security loopholes that let software attach itself even to safe / single user / debug mode. In my opinion making the rootkit run while in safe mode was the line that made the software go from annoying to malware. EVERYONE First4Internet has a contact list and you can send an e-mail to their CEO (or at least the admin assistant for the CEO) at the link below. http://www.first4internet.co.uk/contact.aspx

Re:Nice service pack site
Heh, and guess who signed the ActiveX component you must install to get their "fix": First 4 Internet Ltd.
"First 4 Internet develops world leading Content Management technology providing Digital Asset Management, Copy Protection, DRM and Image Content Filtering solutions."
Sure is puzzling why they have to use a special service from these guys to simply install a file that removes a rootkit. -
Here they are!

Google Groups thread with Ceri from first4internet.co.uk looking for help to write his fucked-up CD drivers...

What's depressing is that Sony undoubtedly paid them a good deal of money to write this shit. -
Re:My question:
No, the rootkit wasn't necessarily intentionally purchased by Sony. Re-read the article. Google for first 4 internet. Find this site. Notice they sell DRM. Thanks for playing.

Re:My question:The rootkit is by First 4 Internet. It's possible that Sony simply purchased this DRM from this outside company, not realizing that the DRM contained a rootkit.
Still, one would hope that Sony would only choose reputable suppliers, ones who wouldn't allow a virus/trojan to be distributed intentially or even through neglect.
