Re:And it's name is...
Jupiter's volume is 1,321 times Earth, but its diameter is only a little over 11 times Earth's. I believe diameter is what you're thinking when you say Gallifrey appears five times the size of Earth. If its volume was five times the size of Earth, the diameter (assuming perfect spheres for the sake of simplicity) would be about 1.71 times the size of the Earth. It's hard to find a good picture of Gallifrey next to Earth from that episode in which the two are equidistant from the observer, but based on the one linked below, I'd say Gallifrey is, at a minimum, 2.5 Earth diameters, giving it a volume of at least 65 Earths and a surface area. Of course, it's a fictional planet, so the real answer is that it's however big they tell us it is and everything else is a trick of the light.

Oh Come on you nancys...
Reading Serges rants is 10 times more interesting than the majority of the hubris-filled replies of most of our
/. brethren.
Flickfilosopher comment thread on this is great.. it seems that Serge gets around, and has a lot of time on his hands... -
Serge talks back...
BTW, this clone e-mail thing has been sent in to all kinds of web sites. People ask "Serge" questions about his aligations in this thread at flickfilospher.

Galaxy Quest
Mr. Shatner,
Fans, and their sometimes obsessive love for fiction such as Star Trek, is possibly even more associated with the program than the actual shows, Gene Roddenberry, you, or the rest of the cast. Even to the point where documentaries and fiction are written in reaction to (or extension of) the original fiction. In that vein, did you see Galaxy Quest? What did you think?

Re:Does anyone else find it interesting...
Actually the best exception I know is the 1986 UK movie 'Room with a View' which received a PG-13 rating in the US. There are only a handful of such movies. The ratings agency can be persudaded. For instance, 'Fatal Attraction' was released as an R though the ratings board admitted later that this had been a mistake.
On the other side, examples of full female frontal nudity may be found in nearly every R rated movie. I accept the assertion of another reader that both sexes are more comfortable with female nudity. But I don't believe this accounts for the dramatic difference.
For readers interested in this topic, let me suggest a 1999 article from the Online Film Critics Association.

All geeks *MUST* read this TR review. The Flick Filosopher, my way-movie-critic-of-choice, wrote a brilliant review of Tomb Raider that will leave you on the floor, laughing and crying at the same time. Here's a quick taste from the beginning:
TOMB RAIDER
Non-geeks will enjoy it too, but this one is really for us. While you're there, check out some of her other reviews and chuck a buck or two in her paypal jar if you like them.
You are standing in the lobby of a movie theater. The smell of popcorn and Jujubes is in the air. To the south is the box office. To the east is the concession stand. To the west are the restrooms. To the north is the auditorium.
