Re:Why not...?
I also can't understand the naming. Free and open standards are one of the most important things today a organisation like the "Free Standards Group" could do a great job in this area. Now merging this into a "Linux Foundation" just doesn't fit.
>Free Software is represented by much more than Linux.
If you want a Foundation which cares about Free Software in general why don't support one of the Free Software Foundations? They exist exactly for this task. I don't know where you living but today you can find a Free Software Foundation in North America, Europe, Latin America and India. If you don't live in one of this regions just select one of them which is near your location or which you like most.

Re:donations are not spent on flights
Also, I just want to add that between FSF, FSFE, FSFI, and FSFLA, organising events around the World is not so difficult. There is a local network of employees and/or volunteers in many cities (and these would be the places chosen to host events).
And, after getting many experts into one place so that a large discussion can be had, all events were recorded in some way. A good example is the European conference, for which the entire two days were recorded and put online.

Clear strategies != good strategies> In the US most of the large companies have clear strategies to increase open source in their product lines...
I think Microsoft and SCO have very clear strategies about open source. So does Linksys and all others on the BusyBox Hall of Shame. A clear strategy to parasatise and cannibalize opensource is never good.
> In Asia and Latin America, we see that there are many national and regional projects to develop and to work on open source.
Have you been to either place ?. FSF India had organized a small conference about free software with people from latin america visiting. The whole idea is to avoid being robbed blind by the New World corporates when it comes to software - not only of money (which could be better spent training their own engineers to write OSS) , but also of their freedom (like lockins that MS Word has brought upon attachements). If Europe is lagging behind , it's very strange that an industrialized continent replete with welfare states fails to motivate it's youngsters to learn with OSS and maybe earn a bit as well. It's a comfort addict situation.

Re:What realy puzzles me...
ok! this is a bit personal but, there was a little talk i had with couple of people from fsf-india
.(yes! there is a fsf-india) about the same issue and I for one am really intrested in doing work on some kind of video editing software. what is stopping me? well! my paid job takes up 12 hours of my day and sometimes the weekend, I cant do free s/w from work and I dont have a reliable net connection at home.
To answer the other question about the lack of free software projects from india. I disagree, there are many going on. I myself contribute alot of stuff and am active on the debian-hurd list as well. I know a person who was one of the top 10 netfilter hackers not too long ago. A kde developer and a gnome developer lives in my city (delhi).
But it is hard to contribute on a regular basis because of a lack of resources, a 24hr net connection for example is 15% of my salary.
