Re:As Flammable as Steel Wool?
Simply by looking at the reactivity series, you can tell that copper is considerably less flammable than iron. OTOH, powdered copper burns with a nice green colour when tossed into a Bunsen flame.
For a practical standpoint, you could ask if steel wool burns in the temperatures of a CPU heatsink. Probably not, and this copper sponge is much less of a risk. Of course, if you like living on the edge, and tweaking CFLAGS is not enough, try an entire case made of a notoriously reactive metal.

Re:Really?
Its like cars (or motorcycles)...
When your younger, you don't mind the beater car that you have to repair all the time. You dream of the day when its perfectly restored, but you never get there. One day you just realize, you have other things you want to do, so you buy a new car that just works. If you're lucky you can now afford one because you stopped f'ing with linux and started f'ing with something else that you can make a good living at. And if you're really lucky, you pick up some pile of junk to work on solely as a hobby and without the stress of wondering if the f'ing thing is going to get you to work on time.
That explains the popularity of Gentoo

Re:Arch Linux switched to systemd
burning mod points for this...
The problem with Arch is that it got too popular, and the forums got overrun by people who wanted to be spoon fed. The devs got sick of being friendly and nice to people, and the more ignorant of the newbies who stuck around turned into something like Gentoo ricers (note: I like Gentoo, and it's users, some very knowledgeable people on the mailing lists and forums). These days the Arch forums can get pretty hostile if you criticise Arch in any way, but it's because of the barrage of stupid posts the moderators had to deal with.
The devs do make one good point though, if users don't want to use systemd there needs to be a working alternative. A few Archers tried to do this, but it mostly ended up as talk, and descended into a flamewar.
rc.conf and the BSD style init* were two of the many things that attracted me to Arch, I don't like it's current direction, or dumping the install scripts, but there's nothing else that has the same configurability in a binary distribution, coupled with the AUR that interests me.
*I started on FreeBSD in 2001 and SuSE 8 shortly after. I've been using Arch on my computers since 2007. -
Re:okay...?
As a single point of evidence, I give you Zabbix... It supports the use of all the major databases (Postgresql, DB2, Oracle, SQLite, etc.) as backends, yet MySQL is recommended as it performs the fastest. http://www.zabbix.com/documentation/1.8/manual/performance_tuning
From the linked document:
rebuild MySQL or PostgreSQL from sources to get maximum performance
2003 just called. They want their Gentoo Ricers back.

Re:Ubuntu vs Gentoo
Apache is the Slackware/Gentoo of the web server world.
That's probably very true. Thanks for pointing that out

Re:Which illustrates what we already knew
I strongly suggest that if you want to get the most performance out of linux, use a compiled-from-source distro like gentoo. It makes a HUGE difference. It takes a lot longer to set up your system (since you compile the entire thing from source) but the end result is worth it if performance is your #1 goal.
A compile-from-source zealot? What is this, 2003?

Hahahaha! I'm glad you picked up on that. I doubt anyone else would have (except for fellow Gentoo users, that is).
I don't completely understand the whole point behind the site either. Perhaps there was some humor in comparing Gentoo users with people who buy inexpensive, often used and under-powered vehicles then promptly glue spoilers and other "bling" to them such that something which is not fast looks fast. That's about as good as I can figure it, though.
On the other hand, I can't help but think that the individual who came up with it was probably somewhat disaffected, disgruntled, jealous, or some permutation thereof and harbored a strange dislike of Gentoo due to a small subset of the community. It completely circumvents the point that a non-trivial number of Gentoo users came from a *BSD background, myself included, precisely because of Portage. I don't see similar complaints about FreeBSD's ports collection which also often requires compilation, for example.
Operating systems are like religion. Everyone has one, and the one they have is the One True Way.

Sabayon development was discontinued, after 3 years of "looking interesting but I don't have the time to test it..." (and the death of the lead dev's father...). It looked really cool, tho.

Re:"Ubuntu's Apt"?
"I don't think that Debian can really compete with Gentoo. Sure it might be okay, but when it comes to dependencies, you probably are still going to have to get them all on your own. Or is there something like portage in the Debian world as well?"

Re:What a load of crap
Linux From Scratch and Gentoo users > Ubuntu and Fedora users. When something breaks on your Linux system and you don't know how to fix it, guess which one you'd rather hear from? A LFS user, or someone who uses Ubuntu because he's scared of the command line? Yeah, that's what I thought. Pwnd.
This site does a good job describing the typical Gentoo user...

Re:Jocks vs. nerds
I don't come here for the average Slashdotter who, I agree, is a naive pimply-faced youth. The occasional useful discussion makes Slashdot worthwhile.
As for your post: I think it's certainly true that there are heritable factors for intelligence in the individual case. And obviously in the aggregate case too: after all, human beings as a whole were once far less intelligent, and a generic change led to our current state.
I just don't see any evidence for aggregate differences in heritable intelligence among the rich and poor in a given society, and think that social and nutritional factors play a far larger role in shaping the observed and obvious differences between the two groups in adult intelligence. Why? I don't see any evidence for a heritable difference. The two groups aren't far enough removed from each other genetically for there to have been much drift, and there's a fair amount of gene flow between them. And after social upheavels, the ones in power end up doing better regardless of whether they are the grandchildren of kings or of peasants. Furthermore, when a child of a rich person is raised poorly, or vice versa, the outcome is appropriate for the social group of the child's rearing.
Given the same opportunities, I strongly suspect we'd see identical outcomes from the children of most people, on average.

Re:32bit Linux only - Give me a break
Though I wouldn't quite say it in the same manner, I absolutely agree with the parent 100%. What does running a 64-bit browser and plugin get you over a 32-bit browser and plugin? It's true that there are a few areas that could see moderate speed improvements from going 64-bit, but for the most part it just does not seem worth the effort to me. Believe me, supporting two binaries is (sometimes more than) twice as hard as supporting one. I think most people bitching about this are essentially ricers. Every time I see a 64-bit whiner I am reminded of Gentoo.

Re:er...
Tell that to someone who's used BSD.
With BSD I have source code. I have a kernel I control. I have a window system that supports network display of applications natively. All my tools work from the command line, instead of having to do things from often-limiting GUIs
BSD? Is that like gentoo?

Re:Slackware
Nah, that's too extreme. Everyone knows that the best way to learn Unix is to run Gentoo.
I can get behind that. The documentation has fallen behind lately, compared to what it once was, but is still pretty good. You might want to first make sure that you have a decent understanding of the command prompt before attempting an install...
However, for Christ's sake, do not use Gentoo as your main distro. It will drive you insane.

Re:Global Warming - why??
what is the benefit of having thousands of geeks compiling the same code over and over, when you can download 1 binary distribution and be done?
Well, you get some nifty "VTEC" stickers...

'Riced-out' is racist?
Riced-out comes from 'rice burner.' Implying that Japanese cars burn rice instead of gasoline. Is that racist? I'd love a car that ran on rice.
Originally, the term referred to a certain subset of Japanese who liked to make their cars look fast without actually spending much money one them. They would add huge 'fart-cannon' tailpipes, park bench sized spoilers (even to front wheel drive cars), VTEC and red R stickers (even to non-Hondas), and outrageously ugly paint and body jobs. Eventually, the term came to refer to anyone that did ridiculous things to their car to make it seem faster than it actually was. The term isn't really racist in practice, it has a meaning similar to 'poser.'
Reminds me of a post a long time ago when I said, "Gentoo is for ricers." Next I suppose you'll be telling us 'niggardly' is racist...
