Apple Doesn't Deliberately Slow Down Older Devices According To Benchmark Analysis (macrumors.com)
According to software company Futuremark, Apple doesn't intentionally slow down older iPhones when it releases new software updates as a way to encourage its customers to buy new devices. MacRumors reports: Starting in 2016, Futuremark collected over 100,000 benchmark results for seven different iPhone models across three versions of iOS, using that data to create performance comparison charts to determine whether there have been performance drops in iOS 9, iOS 10, and iOS 11. The first device tested was the iPhone 5s, as it's the oldest device capable of running iOS 11. iPhone 5s, released in 2013, was the first iPhone to get a 64-bit A7 chip, and iOS 11 is limited to 64-bit devices. Futuremark used the 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme Graphics test and calculated all benchmark scores from the iPhone 5s across a given month to make its comparison. The higher the bar, the better the performance, and based on the testing, GPU performance on the iPhone 5s has remained constant from iOS 9 to iOS 11 with just minor variations that Futuremark says "fall well within normal levels." iPhone 5s CPU performance over time was measured using the 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme Physics test, and again, results were largely consistent. CPU performance across those three devices has dropped slightly, something Futuremark attributes to "minor iOS updates or other factors." -
Ouya Performance Not Particularly Exciting
hypnosec writes "Results of recent benchmark tests reveal that Ouya is not up to the mark and there are over 70 other ARM devices that perform better than the gaming console. Futuremark, which is known for its benchmarks like 3DMark and PCMark, benchmarked mobile devices and the Tegra 3 powered Ouya has been ranked 73rd." Of course, most of the those devices cost a lot more than $100 without carrier subsidies. -
The More Popular the Browser, the Slower It Is
demishade writes "Peacekeeper, the browser benchmark from the makers of 3DMark, comes out of beta and shows an interesting (though perhaps not surprising) tidbit — the more popular a browser, the worse its performance. While it should not be surprising to anyone that IE slugs at the last place, the gap between Firefox and Chrome, is. Once IE's market share goes the way of the Dodo will web developers start cursing Firefox? How long until Google comes out with a JavaScript intensive application that will practically require Chrome to function?" -

How To Get Your Steam Account Pwned
Pharmboy writes "It seems a 13 year old was trying to pose as a Steam employee to gain access to someone else's account, and had the tables turned on him. In a battle of wits, it helps to be smarter than the next guy." From the post: "br0kenrabbit says: Unlike you, I DO work for Valve. Trace my ip and you'll see. Greg_ValveOLS says: huh?" In the interests of being nice to Futuremark's forums, I've gone ahead and pasted the whole coversation below. Read More for the entire, priceless, exchange. br0kenrabbit says: hi

How to Go About Team Building?
B1-66ER asks: "I'm trying build a team of elite overclockers for HWLogic, and a group of developers for our mulit-platform benchmark CPU-XMark. Now, before you tell me to use SF's Project Help Wanted, just remember: Linus Torvalds didn't have the online community development tools that we use now. I'd like to go beyond the help of SourceForge [which is part of the same company as Slashdot] to ultimately create my own organization in the way that Linus has now. It is my goal to one day get CPU-XMark to be a multi-platform Open Source clone of Futuremark's 3DMark05. Any suggestions?" -

AMD Athlon64 4000+ Underclocking
Bios_Hakr writes "PC Stats is running an article on their experiences underclocking an AMD 4000+ processor. Their goal was to try and reduce the voltage requirements and lower the heat output. They benchmark using 3dMark01, 3dMark05, as well as SuperPi. From the article: 'This got us thinking though; what about under-clocking? Most modern processors and motherboards can just as easily run under a rated speed as it can run over... but is there a point to this? Well possibly.'" -

Futuremark Corporation Takes on [H]ardOCP
RichM writes "After the ridiculous lawsuit by Infinium Labs against [H]ardOCP, companies appear to be queuing up to put the boot in. Next up, we have the Futuremark Corporation who apparently objected to the opinion that 3DMark2005 "sucked". The Vice President of Marketing for Futuremark exchanged a series of emails with Kyle Bennett, [H]ardOCP Editor, who dutifully posted the entire conversation to the front page of the site." -
3DMark05 System Benchmarker Released
inotocracy writes " The next 3DMark benchmarking application has been released. 3DMark 05 weighs in at about 280mb (give or take) and is sure to bring your system to its knee's." Thanks also to Steve for the article taking a look at the new version. -

Windows XP Game Advisor Discussed
Thanks to GameSpy for their 'Biz Buzz' summary discussing the recent launch of Microsoft's web-based Windows XP Game Advisor. The Game Advisor site, "created in conjunction with Futuremark, the makers of the 3DMark 3D game benchmark utility, takes the user's answers to questions regarding age range and preferred game genre, then returns a list of recent games (along with gameplay information) that might interest the user." As for the motivation behind this service, a Microsoft spokesperson "...noted that it's not a profit center for Microsoft - it doesn't charge publishers to list their games in the Advisor database... [and] equates it to the company's DirectX API bundle, which doesn't get revenue from users nor publishers, but if, by regularly improving and enhancing and promoting it, another computer with Windows is sold, Microsoft then earns some revenue, albeit indirectly." -
Futuremark And Gainward Tangle Over Benchmarks
An anonymous reader writes "The optimization troubles in GPU land aren't over yet. Yesterday Futuremark released a new anti-optimization patch for 3DMark03. Gainward (who sell graphics cards using NVIDIA hardware) today made a comment that Futuremark had disabled certain features in their ForceWare 52.16 drivers, thus resulting in huge performance drops. A few hours ago Futuremark made an official statement about this : 'The accusation is totally wrong because what it suggests is not even feasible technically. 3DMark03 does not talk to graphics driver, it talks to the DirectX API, which then talks to the driver. Thus, it is impossible for the application to disable GPU compiler...'" -
More on Futuremark and nVidia
AzrealAO writes "Futuremark and nVidia have released statements regarding the controversy over nVidia driver optimzations and the FutureMark 2003 Benchmark. "Futuremark now has a deeper understanding of the situation and NVIDIA's optimization strategy. In the light of this, Futuremark now states that NVIDIA's driver design is an application specific optimization and not a cheat."" So nVidia's drivers are optimized specifically to run 3DMark2003... and that's not a cheat. -
FutureMark Confirms nVidia's Benchmark Cheating
jlouderb writes "As first reported by ExtremeTech, Futuremark has confirmed that nVidia is cheating on its 3DMark2003 benchmark through eight driver optimizations. The 3D graphics performance war just keeps getting more and more interesting!" See our previous story. -
3D Mark 2003 Sparks Controversy
cribb writes "3DMark 2003 is out, sparking an intense debate on how trustworthy its assessment of current graphics cards is, after some harsh words by nVidia and the reply from Futuremark. THG has an analysis of the current situation definately worth reading. The article exposes some problems with the new GeforceFX previously mentioned in a slashdot article on Doom3 and John Carmack. Alas, here seems to be no end to the troubles with the new nVidia flagship." If you've run the benchmark, post your scores here, and we'll all compare. -
