Washington D.C. Legalizes Gambling
"Washington, D.C., with its under 1 million population, has become the first jurisdiction in the United States to legalize online gambling.
The District of Columbia is looking to raise millions of dollars from a multi-billion dollar industry that, until now, has operated exclusively offshore from the United States. That apparently is about to change."
"Players are really loyal in this industry," Ifrah said. "You really have to ask yourself what is the incentive a player is going to have to leave a trusted site with global competition to play in a site that's untested and kind of unknown and doesn't offer you the same level of play."
Looks to me like they just want to get rid of the competition.

GoDaddy in this case was a Wimp
What sucked in this case was that GoDaddy handed over all those domains without a fight, but Network Solutions fought the suit for their customers and won. Network Soluions > GoDaddy.

Re:Open Voting
we're still an incredibly free and wealth country, and the vast majority of people are annoyed but still content.
Although I do agree some of what you said, I strongly disagree with the part which I quoted.
It appears that you are confusing individual freedoms with civil liberties
.Individual freedom is the ability to get in your car at 3 a.m. and drive 3 blocks to the convenience store to buy an unhealthy snack, to pick what you want to eat for dinner at the grocery store, to choose which movie you want to see with a friend, to stay in bed all day, etc. Yes, as a society we generally do have a great deal of individual freedom.
Civil liberties by contrast, are much different. Civil liberties are things such as your right to not have your property seized or searched without a court order, your right to vote, your right to petition the government, your right to peacefully assemble to protest the government, etc.
...and the all important Habeas corpus, your right to petition the government for unlawful imprisonment, which by the way, we did not have until just recently when it was restored by a Federal appeals court. It is of civil liberties which we are speaking when we say that a society is free. When it comes to civil liberties in the United States, we are far from "free" to do as the Constitution allows.
Some examples:
The Protect America Act, The Real ID Act, The Patriot Act, the Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003, The Military Commissions Act, Free Speech Zones, Unconstitutional Wiretapping, etc. provide overwhelming evidence that we are in fact very far from being a free society.
"What a curious phenomenon it is that you can get men to die for the liberty of the world who will not make the little sacrifice that is needed to free themselves from their own individual bondage." -- Bruce Barton (1886-1967)
"The basic test of freedom is perhaps less in what we are free to do than in what we are free not to do." -- Eric Hoffer (1902-1983)
MORE QUOTES:
"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed -- and hence clamorous to be led to safety -- by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." - Political commentator Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956)
"Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposit

Re:Online gambling. Listen, gambling web sites are only a threat because most of them operate offshore and therefore the suckers who use them are funneling their money to small Caribbean islands Don't you think Americans would choose Hara's or Trump over some off shore gaming operation? If the US weren't so protectionist these B&M Casinos would jump into online gaming with both feet.
The only problem I've heard of in an offshore gaming company was a recent one with Absolute Poker where an insider was colluding with a player, telling them the hole cards. Absolute denied it for quite a while until an employee rolled over on the insider who was colluding. Here's a link: http://www.gambling911.com/Absolute-Poker-103107A.html
This could just as easily have happened with an online poker server based in the US if ever it were allowed. B&M dealers have been found colluding with players all the time. -
Re:With one exception - Ron Paul
Interestingly enough Ron Paul's odds were slashed from 200:1 to 15:1 back in March by Sportsbook a popular gambling website. That's a HUGE increase. http://www.gambling911.com/Ron-Paul-Odds-053107.h
t ml No bet for me though, I'd rather donate my money to RP's campaign instead of giving it to someone else.Well then... how about this exercise:
Ask the next 100 people you run into, at random, if they've heard of Ron Paul. I guarantee you that less than 10 people will answer in the affirmative. Probably less than 5.

Here is an interesting article: http://www.gambling911.com/Michael-Devlin-John-Le
f ebvre-011807.html. In America, kidnapping and psychologically altering young boys is not as bad as running a legal service from another country, apparently. From the article: "Betting online in Washington State carries with it the same penalties as those imposed upon first time offender child molesters." -

short term individual stocks = lottery ticket
Well if you really want to make money in the stock market you have to have some insight beyond the average investor.
The problem is that even if you do have insight beyond the average investor, that doesn't mean that your investment will act as you expect it will. Attempting to guess at whether an individual stock will do well is akin to guessing at the beginning of the season who will wind up in the Super Bowl. By the way, according to Gambling911, the Steelers' odds of winning the SuperBowl were 12 to 1 at the beginning of the season, and 18 to 1 at the beginning of the playoffs, while the Seahawks had 25 to 1 early odds of winning.
It could be argued that over time, it is practically impossible to beat the market, and that almost everyone who attempts to outsmart the market in the end fails. If that is the case, investing in individual stocks (and not just volatile ones) is in the end akin to playing roulette at Vegas. Tracking an index makes much more sense over the long haul, and if you're not thinking long term with investment, you might as well be buying lottery tickets.
