rob enderle sighting in article
Everyone's favorite "analyst", rob enderle, has a choice quote at the end of the article here
"What makes this interesting is the way it's being implement much in the same way the graphics model is - add-in boards or on-board. This free's up the CPUs to perform other aspects of gaming. If you can off-load it, it'll make better AI etc. On the other-hand, you can make the environment behave a lot more realistically. We'll get to the "holo-deck" much more quickly with technology like this." -Rob Enderle
thanks for the insight (and grammar), rob. i dont mean to flame, but charlatans like this being quoted incessantly in all manner of technology-related articles disgusts me - and he rules this blowhard-for-hire tech analyst faction on high.
cogent, pertinent, well-written, intelligent - rob, just apply ONE of these attributes to any of your published ramblings. please.

Can render directly to system memory???
I noticed some interesting text on the graphics: "Can render directly to system memory with 100% efficiency"
Isn't this a fix for one of the 3D rendering artists' biggest complaints? I don't do a lot of it now, but back when I was working in a shop that did rendering of CG animation our 3D geeks constantly complained that our graphics cards didn't have as much bandwidth out to the system as they did through their video out port. They even tossed around the idea of doing video capture on the graphics card output becasue it might save time (didn't try it, couldn't get capture card purchase approved).
Is anyone qualified to comment on whether this is just advertizing glitz or if they've really solved the bandwidth-back-to-system problem? I know some people that would really like to find out. -
Re:ReallY? Not my experience at Quakecon.
There are two varieties of "5.1" headphones-- one incorporates multiple drivers, so that each ear is subjected to an anterior speaker, a main speaker, and a posterior speaker. The other variety uses head related transfer functions to approximate surround sound on ordinary headphones.
See this paper for more details, including circuit board layouts and a bit of math. -

Re:Yeah ! Flamebait !!!!
I took a nice 8 discs and a pair or 3ware Escalade 8506-4LP (max 2TB/array, so I have two arrays in RAID0)
The system runs on debian and provides Fileserver for a small video-editing company.
you can find a test of the hdd here
For the case, I took the Cooler Master STC-T01, a bit overkill, but I was a anxious of overheating ...also, it provides room for another 4 disks, but I will need another psu to power 12 disks....
The disks are quite silencious, and the 3Ware card allow for staged disk spin-up, so I was able to run it all on only 1 PSU.
Overall, that makes a 3Tb Fileserver for 4500Euros (including a cheap AMD XP 2400 + 1 Gig ram and Gigabit ethernet), which is quite nice if compared to NAS appliances offered elsewhere.
Of course I don't have the whole collection of utilities to manage the box that comes from major vendors, but Webmin is quite up to the task...
Also, having 8 disks in two RAID0 offers no security/redundancy whatsoever, but I was just asked for a giant fileserver, not a Disaster Recovery implementation 8)
