Programming games?
No mention yet of programming games? Most of them are all self-contained, so you just have to run the program, type some things in, and hit run. C++ Robots on the other hand is simply a C API, so you get to use all the tools that real programmers use. (And all the joy that comes with that). These give a task to perform, maybe not a super-useful task, but it's at least a goal. Usually it's open-ended though, so there really isn't a sense of accomplishment. Most of them need better documentation. And most of them are old, so getting them running is a bit of a task.
A nice list.
AT-Robots What introduced me to programming.

Re:It is true!
Richard's Play-By-eMail Server has a community of thousands of players and supports dozens of games, including proper chess and many chess variants. Games run as slow as one move a month or as fast as one move an hour.

Re:Everything old is new again.
RoboCode is one of many of this genre of games, including C++ Robots, Robot Battle, C Robots, and a number of other games using more or less common programming languages to control robots in an arena, including some sold commercially. You could even include Robot Odyssey in this genre in some ways, although the robots didnt fight and you "programmed" them with electronic circuits.

Re:Actually, it's an "O"I'm positive that it's a class "O" allright...
As the site web says, "...featuring a central Cesaroni Pro150 O impulse rocket motor" is already clear.
Then, if you search Google for "Cesaroni Pro150 impulse" you will find loads of links such as this one detailing the engine specifications.

Pente
My friends play Pente in class all the time. It is a bit like Go. The rules are simple but strategy can get very complex. Here is a simple explanation.
My solution is to get a Palm and play Patience, but that's beside the point. -
C++Robots
Ever since I read about the play-by-email C++Robots I wondered where I could find the original concept. Thanks!

Re:Didn't this exist for the Genesis?
It occurs to me that for games along the lines of Black and White (or a realtime version of, say, Firetop Mountain [http://www.gamerz.net/~fm/Main/]) that sort of thing might be perfect. Instead of gesturing with the mouse, you gesture with your hand -- and actually THROW that fireball at those infidel dogs.
I don't claim to be right, I just claim to be thinking about it. -
PBM is turnbased, yes ?I hink at least at Richards PBM Server we still enjoy it alot. Of course it's mostly board games, but don't forget you don't "see" much of the rest of the mail crowd on the web: you have to be able to read. They only write mail.
Anyway it's a great resource since many of the games are all but extinct, and it's fairly simple to become world champion to some forgotten game - like, I'm the Lord of Rings ("rings challenge username b7kich").
