Best Indie Games So Far This Year
cyrus_zuo writes "Game Tunnel has just finished and published its yearly mid-year article 2005 Independent Game Mid-Term Grades. This article, the mid-year equivalent of Game Tunnel's year-end Game of the Year awards, captures the best indie games so far in 2005 while also grading each game genre. The article is set-up just like a school report card, grading genres, such as action, adventure and strategy, with a letter grade from 'A' to 'D' while also spotlighting two of the best games that have been released so far this year in each of the genres and listing what game GT is looking forward to most in the genre." -
April Indie Game Round-Up
cyrus_zuo writes "Take a break from the E3 world and look at what happened in the Indie world in April. Game Tunnel has posted its April Indie Game Round-Up, covering 15 Independent games that were released since the March Round-Up. While there has not yet been an Editor's Choice winner this year, April featured 6 Gold award winners (average score of 8/10), the same number as had been awarded during the first three months of the year combined! As always it is full of opinions from the illustrious panel of Seth Robinson (Legend of the Red Dragon), Mike Hommel (Dr. Lunatic) and Mike Kasprzak (Sykhronics) on each of the games." -

2004 Indie Games of the Year
cyrus_zuo writes "For all those who think that the best games that came out this year were all sequels Game Tunnel presents a different angle on things with their 2004 Independent Game of the Year awards. For those who believe that the best game this year was that badly named expansion pack that they have the nerve to call Halo 2, check out the awards for a different side of gaming than you are used to." -

Cyrus_Zuo writes "Game Tunnel has up a September overview of Indie games, making this the fourth in a series of wrap-ups that cover all of the indie games that come out each month. This month has two 'professional indie' releases that were released in September, Wik & the Fable of Souls from Reflexive Entertainment (Star Trek Away Team) and Outpost Kaloki from Ninja Bee (a subdivision of Wahoo Studios)." -

Indie Gaming Gets 2004 Mid-Term Grades
Thanks to Game Tunnel for its 2004 mid-term report card on the independent PC gaming scene, rating what "is turning out to be one of the most impressive years yet in the Indie world." Among the approved-of titles include action games such as Hamsterball ("a wonderful surprise that plays a lot like Marble Madness would play [if updated]"), platform adventures such as Gish ("[starring] a ball of tar [whose] goal is to find his girlfriend who was taken down... the sewer"), before looking forward to interesting hopefuls that include Oasis ("takes all the strategy of a game like Civilization and then turns it into a 3 minute experience.") -
On The IGF Awards And Defining 'Indie' Gaming
Thanks to GameTunnel for its editorial discussing the outcome of last week's Independent Game Festival awards, as previously covered on Slashdot Games, and part of a comprehensive GameTunnel IGF section. The writer is particularly concerned that the relatively high-budget, but still publisher-less Savage: The Battle For Newerth won major awards: "IGF has this year shown that a team's ability to raise money is as important as innovation itself. Consider this, if Savage was done on a $50,000 budget instead of a $1.5 million dollar budget, how would it be different? Would things that are in the game have been left out? I believe that the clear answer to this question is yes." What defines an 'indie' game for you, and should there be a maximum budget for IGF-entered games? -

Top Indie Games Of 2003 Discussed
Mr.Wiggin writes "Specialist indie site GameTunnel recently announced its top ten indie games of 2003. Each game was scored by its regular review panel, and the list highlights the growing craftsmanship and quality being brought to the niche low budget independent games scene. There are also awards for specific genres, such as best graphics, best sound, most original concept, best adventure, etc. Why should we be concerned by low budget offerings like this - isn't it just the usual cliched crop of puzzle games? Thankfully, no, since these are the elite cream of the indie crop. Some say indie games are the home of innovation and the birthplace of future star developers (remember id, anyone?). It is also one of the few remaining mediums where we (the gaming public) actually get listened to and can often make a difference." -
