Re:KDE: one of the most successful OSS projects
KDE comes with so many other good programs as well, like KNode (News reader) and KMail (lightweight email program)... Does GNOME have any comparable programs?
Errr... yes! Pan is probably the best free newsreader for any platform, Evolution is an incredibly well-integrated mail, calender and addressbook program, and Balsa is a very decent more lightweight mail reader. For office programs, Gnumeric is way more advanced than KSpread, Guppi (still in CVS) is one of the only serious free graphical data analysis tools, GnuCash is very polished, and Dia rocks. Graphically, Sodipodi is shaping up very nicely, gPhoto rules, and the GIMP integrates better with a GNOME environment than with KDE. And then there's XMMS (the best mp3/ogg/mpeg/divx Linux player), Grip (the best CD player/ripper combo) and GStreamer for multemedia; there's GnomeICU, Gabber, Gaim and X-Chat for messaging; there's Gnapster for file-sharing; and there's more useful utilities (e.g. Bug Buddy), system utilities (e.g. Red Carpet), and panel applets than you could shake a stick at. And I know I've missed out quite a few more (Gnome-DB, Oregano and Dr. Genius have just spring to mind - and, yes, Galeon, which rocks and is now my primary browser). In other words, GNOME is hardly short on applications.
If anything, I've often found it to be the other way round. While Konqueror rules, and KWord is much better featured than AbiWord (though I personally dislike the interface), I think where KDE usually excels is in the underlying desktop core, rather than the applications. But that's just my opinion.
PS Sorry for ranting. -

Re:ICQ...
ISTM most of the comments here have been to do with the standard ICQ client for windoze available from ICQ/Mirabilis directly.
To make a suggestion, GnomeICU is the best client I've seen - it spends most of its time being about 1cm square in the Gnome panel, with a light to show your status. If someone messages you, you get a flashing yellow post-it symbol. Does chat, does file xfer, does everything else you require in a proper chat client. Doesn't do birthdays. Doesn't sing (unless you enable sounds), doesn't dance. The contact list itself has an optional 'auto hide' feature, which is cool, too. -
bah. If you couldnt figure out the link. here goes

Packages in 6.1 Just a Wee bit *too* Bleeding EdgeDoes anyone else think that many of the packages in Mandrake 6.1 are just a bit premature? For example (see the announcement):
- Linux-Kernel: 2.2.13 (pre4)
- Enlightenment 0.16-dev5
- GnomeICU 0.66 (according to the GnomeICU Homepage, 0.66 hasn't been released yet..it's still in developement!
And there are other examples of software that has barely been tested...
And while I respect the fact that they are no longer basing their distribution on RedHat, they do claim compatibility with RedHat. I fear that by releasing their distribution prior to RedHat's release they risk some incompatibility.
Redhat now has a chance to "one-up" Mandrake's distribution if they choose to.
Just a few thoughts...

Agreed
Both KDE and GNOME are huge projects for the linux community right now, as they seem to be critical for mainstream acceptance(assuming this is what we want). I love hearing news about both; even though I don't use KDE, I'm fairy finicky about my desktop and very open to change. If you want even more current information about GNOME, go to http://gdev.net and start reading changelogs
:-). Unfortunately I do not know of such a site for KDE, although one probably exists(any suggestions ppl?).
