that's exactly what it does - a single window interface to multiple pages.

why it's cool (in theory - not all of these are implemented in mozilla yet - see my above post):
-able to quickly switch between webpages if you want, instead of cycling through all open apps
-less clutter on your task bar / gnome pager / whatever
-opening a new tab is quicker than a new window - less widgets have to be redrawn

is it perfect? no. but it's definitely a handy feature, and a number of programs have put it to good use. see: opera, xchat, gaim, etc

just curious - do you know a keyboard shortcut to switch between tabs? i think it's a killer feature, but it'd be much better if i didn't have to use the mouse to switch. gaim has it built in, and xchat you can select whatever shortcut you want, which makes tabbed programs some of the best laid out & most pleasing to use. however, i don't really use the tabbed browsing in mozilla 'cause of the fact that i don't know how to switch via the keyboard. any idea?

Anyway, I was just fucking with you. I know how it is - I can't buy as much shit as I want any more, since Jenni lives with me and we're planning for the future and whatnot. I probably won't buy the 5 gig one @ $400 'cause I do agree that it's overpriced. But... it is a hell of a product. A 5 gig mp3 player that's that small, has the interface it does (which is all a matter of preference, but I like it personally), sorts by artist, album, song, and stores playlists... plus acts as a portable hard drive if you need it to, has a 10 hour battery life *and* works over FireWire... all in all, I'd say that's not too bad. Or rather, you could do a hell of a lot worse for that money. And since I have 2 Macs (PowerMac G4 Dual 800 Tower & new iBook), this would integrate very nicely.

Funny thing is, I'm not even a mac guy. I'm writing this from Linux on an AMD processor. The iBook was my first Mac. I just think Apple's got some really great shit lately.

But yeah. Pardon the sardonic mood. I'm a turd, I know.

Good luck on the house. I know it's tough finding the one that just /fits/, both price-wise and in what you're looking for. Hope it turns out well.

I had an addition built onto my house in 1990 and that alone was SIXTY THOUSAND DOLLARS! In the middle of nowhere! Just for 3 measly bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, 3 bathrooms and a little den area downstairs. Now I find out that I can get an extra room for only $400! I feel so stupid! I had heard that wages for skilled laborers and materials costs were going up with inflation, but I guess I was duped! Gosh, at $400/room, I could have had that addition built for under $4,000! Care to provide some benchmarks? Maybe point us in the direction of ONE article that shows comparable applications being faster than dual 800MHz G4's?

Maybe if you jumped off your horse for a few minutes and actually spent time really USING a high-end Macintosh, you'd come to appreciate the fact that their hardware is top of the line, the operating system is superb, it's *all* easy to use and, yes, it's *fast*.

I have a Dual G4 800MHz with 1.152 GB of RAM and an iBook 500MHz G3 with 320 MB of RAM.

It's *really* fast. On both machines.

The things that were slow were window resizing, etc. And that's mostly fixed now (though resizing Internet Explorer or Mozilla still seems to drag a big when it's doing a complex web page, but that's to be expected).

As far as a scale-down... I think they could do it. The biggest resource-eaters would be Aqua & Quartz, two of the underlying graphics technologies. If those were eliminated or replaced with something faster, I'm sure one would get decent performance with a scaled down OS X.

As far as Apple throwing resources at it... we don't really know what "it" is... yet. 17 minutes to go. But really, if it is a small PDA-like device, I think it will be a big hit. People *loved* the Newton and have been dying for something like it for a long time. So yes, it would be worthwhile for Apple to do so.

Yes, on the day that 2.4.0 is released, there aren't going to be any distros that run it. There is no "behind-the-scenes" collaboration here. When it's done, it's done. Period. RedHat probably has the best idea 'cause Alan Cox really is the lead programmer for the kernel, and he's employed by RedHat. Otherwise, everyone else is going on whatever has been said publicly. No distro has been released yet with 2.4.0 included, but it's not like one couldn't upgrade if they wanted to. I've installed Linux on all the systems I'm going to for a while, and I'm sure as shit not going to be risking system integrity by performing some "Upgrade" option off a bootable cd-rom. I'd much rather have the kernel source in a tarball and be able to upgrade all my machines, and I'm certain a vast majority of the Linux community is with me on that.
