I'd value some extra accuracy in the encyclopedia (as far as Wikipedia claims that title) over chewing it down to people who have trouble with sciences. That's what external references in the articles should be good for though.

There seems to be a conception that everybody should be able to understand everything. It reminds me of an old joke (note, I have no idea of your nationality and it is not meant personally):

An European thinks: I don't understand him, so what's wrong with me?
An American thinks: I don't understand him, so what's wrong with him?

Although in this particular case, I'd refer more to Robert Sheckley's wonderful little story.

Sounds very much like seventies to me... take a look at the rhytmic sforzando accents of Barry Ryan's Eloise and the fanfare-like soundtracks for Dallas and Dynasty.

Of course, there are millions of songs that never became very popular. Heck, there might be zero information about your sample on the internet. You might ask some DJ of some 70/80s station instead, don't know.

The "both barrels" approach to marketing really turns me off, but I understand that's the only thing that the Hollywood establishment cares about. "Rendezvous" was one of my all-time favorite Clarke novels. I hope the movie goes into appropriately graphic detail about (queue "Pigs in Space" sound fx) : Sex In Space.

In fact, surround sound dates back to the 1950s, with the big-screen processes like Cinerama (7-channel sound), Todd-AO (6-channel sound), 35mm mag stripe (4-channel sound). It continued in the 70s and 80s with 35mm-to-70mm optical blow-ups, so that movies could be presented in the 70mm 6-track format. This lasted for a long time, with many movies (including the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies) receiving 70mm 6-track presentations on their initial release. Then, finally, in the early-to-mid 1990s, today's digital sound processes started taking over, and now movies are 35mm-only, with 5.1 lossy-compressed digital sound.

Next is the STL. The STL is a fairly recent newcomer to C++ as are templates themselves. The STL can save you a lot of time that you'd spend reimplementing the same data structures. It's an excellent resource. There are other cool things you can do with templates as well -- the GTK-- signal system is way cool, for instance.

I just bought a GameLink from the UFO guys ( http://www.cd64.com/ ) on "Fuk Wa" (really!) Street in Hong Kong. Programming and running your creations on an emulator is pretty good, but nothing beats seeing it on an actual gameboy. No linux support for the GameLink, though other devices do have open specs and C code.

Nintendo recently shut down another company which makes these devices called " Bung "; this is really disappointing to me. It's probably true that most people use these things for piracy, but I really am using mine legitimately.

On the other hand, I understand that the GB game "Harvest Moon" began as a amateur project. So maybe there is still hope for Nintendo...
