Less damaging side-effects
We've heard about fusion happening just around the corner every month for the last 30 years. What makes this any different?
They've been able to generate nuclear power without some of the damaging side effects.

Re:It figures.
Actually, I think it probably has more to do with protecting themselves against some of the natural hazards associated with nuclear energy in Southest Asia.

Lucid Dreaming is Cheaper
Although lucid dreaming is not exactly the same as dream control, it does give you the ability to control your OWN ACTIONS in a dream. The advantage of lucid dreaming is that you don't have to buy any gizmos to make it work (although some people do sell things to help you achieve lucidity). The disadvantages are, as I mentioned, the fact that you only control yourself and not necessarily your surroundings and it takes some time to learn the skill of becoming lucid in a dream.
Lucid dreaming is basically a technique for becoming conscious that you are in a dream without actually waking from that dream. It takes some work, believe me. We're talking months here. But it is kinda cool. Once I realize that I'm dreaming, I usually take advantage of that fact by blasting any enemies around me with a Godzilla-like breath weapon! While this is admittedly pretty geeky, I can say that here without being laughed at (right?) because we're all geeks. Plus, it's pretty neat to see Bill Gates go up in flames!
Another advantage of lucid dreaming is that it's a proven technique whereas this new gizmo is just something that someone is trying to sell you.

Anniversaries?
Thanks to Tokyopia.com for their article showing a massive Tokyo skyscraper with Space Invaders projected on the side of it, as part of Taito's celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of the all-time classic shooter.
If this is how the Japanese choose to celebrate the anniversary of one of their more notable contributions to world culture, I shudder to think of what's going to happen next year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of one of their other more notable exports! I can just see some poor Japanese businessman or cute little Japanese high school girl casually looking up at the side of a skyscraper, seeing the image, and grumbling "Oh Lord, not again!" before running to the nearest shelter!

Cost not the issue
You're missing the important point here. It's not that solar power is going to save the Japanese a lot of money. They're desperate to ween themselves off nuclear power using any means necessary. After all, if you had to contend with these three smashing your reactors on a yearly basis, wouldn't you be damn anxious to do something -- anything -- to stop relying on nuclear power?

Re:Yawn...
I hardly think IT is trivial.

ANEB!
Actually, this has been done before:
Godzilla vs. Biollante, specifically.
In fact, it was actually *interesting* in that film, with one of the best G-suits ever, imho. Heck, there was even some reflection on the consequences of using such a thing. Similarly, for Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), considering the aftermath of the Oxygen Destroyer and Serizawa's fears in Godzilla (1954/1955).
For current aspects of the original legend, see the real thing in its original home.
