Tokyo Skyscraper Attacked By Space Invaders

Thanks to Tokyopia.com for their article showing a massive Tokyo skyscraper with Space Invaders projected on the side of it, as part of Taito's celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of the all-time classic shooter. The special Anniversary Edition is being re-released for the PlayStation 2, and the remake has some interesting features: "You are in a 3D room... [and] can adjust the camera... [to] have the view you would have probably had if you were actually sitting at a real table top. While you play you can hear sounds coming from the other machines in the room." Special editions of the game also come with a classic tabletop controller, as Slashdot Games reported a few weeks back.

That some guys projected Space Invaders onto a building as part of an advertising stunt? Well let me tell you something.

As part of an advertising stunt a few years ago, FHM (UK) projected a picture of Gail Porter, naked, onto the side of the Houses of Parliament. Now that's much more of a story.

    Where was Slashdot then, eh?

Had it been Natalie Portman, /. would have taken notice. Think about it. You'd have Natalie Portman naked, projected onto stone. The trolls would post until they collapse into apoplectic fits. The moderators would be powerless to stop them! Natalie Portman naked and petrified, and it's on topic!!

Any one find it strange that it is as much of a game playing simulator as it is a game? It really feels like I'm playing Space Invaders!

I'd love to hear the subwoofers as the space invaders descending down like the RIAA's attempt to trample down file swappers. I'd imagine the company would just play some techno music then.

So, if I read that summary right the game consists of space invaders with a twist, that beng that you are "part of" a 3d room, looking at a virtual 2-d display.

So you are actually sitting in a real-world 3-d room, looking into your 2-d display, which is showing a virtual 3-d room with in which you are looking at a virtual 2-d display ? Seems kinda crappy to me.

Maybe I should read the article, might make more sense.

I think it is more fun if you play the game by telling your little brother who is holding the remote control for ASIMO to have ASIMO press the buttons on the Sony Aibo dog remote control to make the dog chew on the GameBoy advance in a way that plays it, which is displaying this 3-d room recreation of Space Invaders....

If this is how the Japanese choose to celebrate the anniversary of one of their more notable contributions to world culture, I shudder to think of what's going to happen next year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of one of their other more notable exports! I can just see some poor Japanese businessman or cute little Japanese high school girl casually looking up at the side of a skyscraper, seeing the image, and grumbling "Oh Lord, not again!" before running to the nearest shelter!
