Doesn't work at all: FF 23.0.1
It doesn't work at all as of 10/1/2013 4:56 PM EST on Firefox 23.0.1. There are two crippling issues:
1) The CSS doesn't work at all. So I just see a stream of unformatted text and images. I've reloaded a few times and it still happens.
The head has the following in the top (modified to pass the lameness filter)
link href "//netdna.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/3.2.0/css/font-awesome.css"
link rel "stylesheet" href "//c.fsdn.com/s/css/application.css?release_20131001.01"2) It has a NSFW ad that says "MALE GAMERS ONLY"
The ad image is: here
I have enough Karma that I could disable ads, but I leave them on so you can have a revenue stream. But as of today I will disable ads because I can't have a mostly naked female body on my work computer screen. -
Sexism Still a Problem at Slashdot
At least given the very appropriate banner ad I was being served along with this story.

Re:Yay ignorance.
So my question is, would the ad that just showed up on slashdot as I went in to this story be porn? It had an attractive lady in some attractive attire.

Obama Health Care Ad, WTF???
Did anyone notice that the ad on
/. is an anti-Obama ad, that then links to a newsmax "poll"?Well, of COURSE if you have that pic, with that message, the only people who will participate will be rabidly anti-Obama. Kind of makes for a nice poll, Newsmax, right? Of course, that *couldn't* be the purpose, now could it?
LAME.

Re:Google SpamThe sites visitors don't necessarily have to click the ad. They only need to have an accelerator installed which preloads all hyperlinked pages regardless of whether they will click the links later or not. Do you have evidence that accelerators do that for third party domains? If you're browsing foo.com, I can see it preloading foo.com/products and foo.com/support... but preloading http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/iclk...? If so, that kind of software would be costing advertisers millions.

Re:Use Opera
Or for a more targeted approach use any adblocking system and block http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/googl

Good business model
They should also include malware along with the google ads on these spam domains.
You see, the malware will break windows, but that's ok because it will create work for anti-virus writers, who in turn will have more money to spend on bread in the bakers. The baker will buy shoes benefiting the cobbler.
Everyone in society therefore benefits from domain squatting scumbags.

Re:Are AdWords unobtrusive?
I don't find AdWords obtrusive... well not since I added http://.googlesyndication.com/* to my adblock list.
If you don't like adverts, block them! I have no problem with Wikipedia taking ads, frankly, I'd find a blocked ad that I don't see far less intrusive than their constant begging for donations. -

Did anyone else see this Google ad just under the Slashdot story?

Re:Spam
Add http://.googlesyndication.com/* to your block list in Opera. That'll get rid of the pesky Google ads.

Hats o' gold, thanks to your friends at /.
Eventually the forum thread got out of hand, and he set up a website devoted to answering the questions. If you have a question that hasn't already been answered, email him at the address on the site. He is responding daily and sometimes within minutes. This guy is dedicated.
And thanks to slashdot, maybe those Google Ads he's added to his answers will bring him a few bucks he wouldn't have made on the "out of hand" macrumors forum.
Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with cashing in -- macrumors' forum isn't exactly ad-free either -- but I'm not real sure how making your own website to answer questions makes slashdot. If he'd taken it apart, upgraded the processor, or found out that there's something inside we hadn't heard of, well, telling us about that is possibly post worthy. Right now, this story is just hardware.slashdot.org-as-billboard.
One of the incredible bits of insight from the site:
Q: What can you tell me about the battery?
A: Not a whole lot. Made in China (what isn't), Model # A1175, Li-ion.
Wow.
Save yourself some time, and skip directly to pictures of Sudan or Christian Wife Pictures. Not joking. -

Re:Encrypted?
It goes even further than that.. google tracks you even when you're not on their site, ever see google adsense? Every ad they display makes a call to: http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_
a ds.js and guess what, burried in that, i can bet you they not only track how long you're looking at that page (with AJAX), but they're tracking where your mouse is, and what you type. -
Re:Who's hosting the logos?
It looks like Google is hosting the banner media on vp.video.google.com. An example pulled from Adblock:

(Too bad this gets really uggly - but hey, there it is... more or less) -
Fastest Fix Around
Fear not! Get Firefox and get the fix!

Re:Indeed, this is the free market at work.
You have to block the server http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/*, or something like that. I don't remember exactly, since it's been a while since I did it. Pull up the list of all blockable items on some page that has them, and it'll be obvious.

Scientific community is so stupidWhy does the scientific community keep using Linux? Everyone knows now that Microsoft has a lower TCO and is better at everything.

Re:How is this not an abuse of power?
Well, according to the first article They are only looking to switch were there was a viable alternative, using it as a big plus, rather than a "sure thing". From the article,
The company's products are just too essential, and many open source alternatives too ineffective for many of the kinds of big database jobs governments require. Kriss said the state would still use Microsoft products when cost-effective open-source alternatives aren't available. -
The Ultimate Sellout
Not Mitch Kapor, but Slashdot. You thought Visual Studio ads were bad? Now Slashdot is accepting advertising from the BSA!
The iframe going to google's ad syndicator has the ads. See here
