I know some people on Facebook that maintain some privacy: one never fills in all the fields or puts in erroneous information, one puts her middle name as her last name and posts an avatar instead of a photo.
Another side to this is to consider that some people may actually allow access. I used to. I had an SSID of JUMPONFREE. I did this for two reasons: one to give Internet access to people in my apartment complex if they did not want to pay for it themselves, and two because I incorporated transparent proxying and compiled lists of visited sites (as well as port mirroring on the switch to track protocol usage). You don't have to concern yourself with abusers if you set up traffic priorities and/or bandwidth limiters. I am not alone, as I have seen many cleverly named SSID's indicating the owner is not just some non-configuring noob, but rather someone that cares enough to share.
Having never played D&D, What is the appeal of this game? It sort of looks like it's mostly about mathematics, not trying to be flamebait here, I'm genuinely curious.
It is a game, same as any other, appealing to some and not others; no different than Yahtzee, chess, or Chutes and Ladders. DnD can be played in different ways, with more or less role playing. What I mean is some people voice their characters and even act out what they (in the game) are going to do. For me, I say things such as, "my character will attempt to perform X and here is my roll." After a twenty year break from the game, I have started playing once a week with some people at work during lunch. We have just completed an adventure and are continuing onto something else, our band of a few elvish fighters, a half-minotaur cleric, a bard with a dog, and my character, a thief (rogue).
Just so you get an idea of our typical gaming, here is what happened at our last session:
Our party gathered some weapons from a band of ruffians that were turned over to the magistrate of the town we were staying in. We took the equipment to a mining camp. I rolled to see whether I had forged a mining license well-enough to get our party into the mines without paying - successful. Unsure, two others rolled "sense motive" to see if we were being told correct information by the license taker about which mining path to take. I rolled diplomacy to see if we could get a better deal on which path to take or how much our party would receive in payment for a days work in the camp, which did not fail but it was made clear that we were well-liked and had been given a fair deal. Some vendors would not purchase the equipment/weapons we brought with us and it was found that they were stolen from a known local craftsman. We did find a willing vendor and offloaded. I rolled "sleight of hand" to steal some eternal light from a person showing wares so we could enter the mines. After some walking through the mountain we came across a dead orc or something humanoid (had been dead a while). A search (many rolls) turned up nothing but footprints. So, the dog and the minotaur had some rolls to determine which tracks were freshest and where they lead. The party is now climbing a steep, narrow staircase.
I would say that if you are interested in playing, find a game and squeeze in for a test. Don't use it as your only litmus because dungeon masters, or game controller / story teller / holder of all the cards / knower of all the information, are all different. Players are all different. Back in the day, there were some people I enjoyed playing with and some I simply could not stand to be around.
Hoping what I wrote gives you some answer to your question.
Deja vu is just one example of a glitch within this vitual world.
Seriously though, metaphysics is most likely humanity's oldest quest for truth. Now, technology has given us a new dimension, if you will, to ponder. Maybe the question is not how did we get here and where did we come from. Perhaps it is something like, "what lame coder did this to us?"
"I have hated downloading music within iTunes only to be told that I cannot make a mix mp3 CD"
Yes, you can, right from iTunes.
iTunes preferences - Advanced - Burning. Select MP3 Disc as the format. Make playlist - Burn. I do this all the time and works in my car (MP3 player also)
I could spend many hours in the day correcting people's ignorance of the functionality of iTunes... oh well.
Not to start an argument, but you are not correct. If you download music within iTunes (purchased from iTunes Store), that music can only be burned to audio CD, never to mp3 CD. Nor can the track be converted to mp3 format. You must burn to audio CD, delete the track, rip from your burned CD, etc. Do not be so haste and harsh; I am smart enough to have recognized the problem and figured out how to get around it.
Really, at this point, I purchase compact discs for one purpose: to have a real product to carry from the store and then store on a shelf. I rip all my CD's so that I may listen to the music on the device of my choice; one that holds far more information than any single or group of discs. It is getting this way with movies too. I figure that I will start ripping my movies to large storage systems and build a video-on-demand device at home. Don't get me wrong though, I do not like downloading music nor movies. Perhaps I am a relic, but I want a real 'box' product. In addition, I have hated downloading music within iTunes only to be told that I cannot make a mix mp3 CD (for my truck, which reads mp3 discs) with some of the music I just paid for the right to use. I feel the same way about movies, and to take it a step further, I feel most of my drive space is something expendable. If I lose an mp3 from a rip, I simply rip again. If I lose a download, I am SOL.
Partially true. Why specifically name the Internet? We could substitute the word with any of the following: Postal system, library, school system, etc. This sets a horrible precendence and seeds the idea that the Internet must be controlled or even dismantled.
I am having a great time since returning to play after twenty years. Some of us at work have a lunch session once or twice per week. I think DnD is going to be around forever because there is endless material and the rules just continue to build in order to give the game more things to track.
No, "Ducky" was the official winning video. The viewers have selected "The Problem with Math." Big difference there.
These are the same people that cannot understand why Bush won over Gore, even though more people voted for Gore. The popular vote is not the same of the officiated vote.
I really enjoyed the entries and think that many topics can be discussed/taught in such a way. Topics can be offered to people whom otherwise would not read up on that subject. Imagine a combo of How Stuff Works and Wikipedia. A video information site would be one step closer to Vox of the future (from the movie The Time Machine).
If it comes with an install CD with all of the necessary drivers included... awesome!
Actually something I liked from the Compaq SmartStart. You would start your installation with the Compaq CD, tell it which OS, it would create a small drivers partition and manage the installation process setting up the hardware drivers.
I wonder how many of you want pre-installed operating systems - any operating system. It seems to me that most installations have a central installation service (kickstart, jumpstart, etc) and would like boxes to be configured with certain parameters and niceties, such as partition and block sizing, configuration files, kernel versions, cfEngine keys, local accounts, etc... I really am curious, as I have never used the factory-installed operating system. Even if it came with one, the first item on the 'to do' list was to wipe the drive and start over.
Not really. The difference between D&D, and Magic, is that people (as far as I know) don't play D&D in any sort of tournaments. If there were WotC-run D&D tournaments, they'd be within their rights to specify which version of the rules were used. You have to have a level playing field.
D&D, on the other hand, is played by small groups of people, rather than in tournaments. There's nothing they could do to stop house rules if they tried. Similarly, there's nothing they could do to stop house rules in Magic if they tried, as long as you're not talking about a sanctioned tournament.
House rules with Magic were horrible. I cannot do my Time Elemental / Stasis trick any more!?!?!
Whales live indefinitely, and their master race 'swims' the universe in large cylinders. Everyone has known this since the historical documents were released in 1986.
Hey guys, let's say you have a 500 foot pole out in space, far away from anything (no friction, nothing). you are on one end of the pole, and i on the other. Then i push the pole towards you. When does the other end of the pole move towards you, after MY END MOVES? is it instantaneous? or does it take.000000005 seconds of whatever. Like the atoms of the pole push each other on and on and so forth till it gets to the end. if it does take time, is it faster than light, or slower? what if the pole was 300,000,000 meters long? does it take about 1 second for u to notice the other end moves?
Do not try to push the pole. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth: there is no pole. Then you'll see, it is not the pole that is pushed, it is only yourself.
Ok, I'm confused. What does the great flood have to do with creationism?
I am equally confused wall cosmology has to do with evolution. Evolution has to do with changes in species through procreation; having nothing to do with the Big Bang or age of the universe.
Yes, I imagine its easy to call people idiots when they aren't interested in the same fields you are. I'm sure lots of scientists think I'm an idiot because I don't understand what they take for granted. Or perhaps they're not so elitist.
No. Most people are idiots; just look at any jury.
Jainism; for one.

That's my question as well. What level of logging is acceptable?
This is not very well thought out. There are so many ways to proxy, encapsulate and encrypt traffic, logs would be useless.
In San Francisco, 75k is not a very comfortable salary.
