Re:Why use a sub-standard Desktop?
In front of me, I have two bowls. One bowl with soup, and one bowl with screws. Of course, I could just have one bowl with both the soup AND the screws in it.
Thing is, sometimes their is a logical division between apps. On one virtual desktop I might have firefox and some notetaking ap running, while on another I have an IDE running. It's really convenient.
And how can you hate virtual desktops? Even if you have them, you aren't forced to use them.
You can try them out today, even if you're running windows:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx (used to be really painfully slow, perhaps it's gotten better?)
or
http://www.goscreen.info/ (haven't tried this one) -
GoScreen FTW.
Light, doesn't hog memory, and fast, etc.

GoScreen
http://goscreen.info/ is a good virtual desktop program. Light resources too even for 9x. However, it's not free.

Multiple desktops on Vista too
Windows NT has always supported multiple desktops under the hood, and MS has had a powertoy that exposes this for ages.
There's many other third-party virtual desktop managers around, if you look, even for Vista.

goScreen!
goScreen is awesome. It's not pretty, but it works. Light resources too. I even ran it in Windows 9x years ago! It's not free, but cheap and free upgrades.

goscreen
has to be http://www.goscreen.info/
" GoScreen was created in 1998. Since the first time I saw (and worked with) "pager" in FVWM desktop window manager for X Windows I wanted something similar in Microsoft Windows world. The idea of how could I implement this came to me in spring of 1998, and after several weeks of experiments and intensive development goScreen 1.0 was published. I must say that FVWM gave me only initial inspiration. GoScreen has already evolved very far from that initial idea. " -
GoScreen
GoScreen is the best virtual desktop manager that my friends and I found and use. It is not free after 30(?) days, but it is cheap and worth it. It still supports old Windows 95 to the newest (XP). Very low resources. We use it at home and work.

Re:A small screen with VD manager vs. big screen.
TeknoHog: My friends and I use GoScreen (not free though) in Windows. It's great. We are way more productive with this virtual desktop manager, even in Windows.

Re:First thoughts
I've looked for it, but I never found a powertoy for virtual desktops from MS for Windows 2000. The one for XP didn't even do what I was used to have with KDE.
One thing that comes as close as possible to real virtual desktops is Virtual Dimension, which I've been using now with Windows 2000 and XP. (another is the shareware goScreen) -
Re:Virtuawin not necessary
Its not free but I really like goScreen. You can have a larger preview window that autohides with different background images for every desktop. http://www.goscreen.info/

Re:Win XP Power Toys
goScreen is a virtual desktop manager for Windows. I've used this for a few years and it's always been stable for me.

GoScreen!
OK, it is not free but it is the best one and so small in terms of resources and memory. Home Page.

Re:Movies while working are newsworthy & produ
Same here.
Ever since I've tried Goscreen I've been looking for a similar alternative and found it in Virtual Dimension. When I sit behind someone else's pc or laptop, I get kinda frustrated at not being able to switch desktops. But because I also want to be able to work on one screen and have another open for reference/status/whatever, I started the trend at work to use a second workstation. Soon after that I started using tightvnc with win2vnc (the improved version).
Thanks to the link to synergy provided by gl4ss I'm going to hook up my third workstation running FreeBSD as well (had a bit too much trouble with using vnc for X).
I'm going to get sooo spoiled. *grin* -
Go Screen virtual desktop manager
Someone sent me a copy of Go screen and I've been using it for the past 5 years on two different work PCs (NT and 2k).... and it does what you'd expect; it acts like a virtual desk top!
I'm sure there are a thousand others out there. -
Desktop Manager...
The last time I tried to use Rich Wareham's desktop manager on my PowerBook G4 (1 Ghz; 15"), it crashed in Jaguar/MacOS X 10.2.8 since it wasn't compatible with it. Only Panther.
Are there any good free virtual desktops? Codetek's nice but it is not free and a bit bloated (too many features).
I use GoScreen in Windows, and it rocks! -
