Re:"Override Back Button Event"???
I've found TargetKiller to be quite useful. I also have a disliking of pages that insist on opening things in new tabs. It's my browser after all.
A sibling post mentioned TabMixPlus. I have avoided this addon since the mid Fx 2.x days as it has become rather bloaty for my liking. TargetKiller and Focus Last Selected Tab add all the tab functionally I want/need for Fx 3.

Re:Gonna have to face it....you're addicted to DUP
With that said, I wish I could find an addiction that would make me forget to eat.
Here you go....just follow this simple program, and you'll shed that unwanted weight in no time! ^_^ -
Animated and pop-up ads
I used to block ads all the time, using a userContent.css file from http://www.gozer.org/mozilla/ad_blocking/ but now I don't bother so much. If I turn off GIF animation and block pop-ups then that's enough of the annoyances dealt with that I can put up with the rest. A static ad on a webpage doesn't bother me, just like a static ad in a magazine doesn't. Flash ads are dealt with by not having flash installed (which also means that any website that chooses to use flash for the main part of their site, for navigation, or for 'click to enter' pages loses my custom).

For those who'd rather just block the ads
http://www.gozer.org/mozilla/ad_blocking/css/user
C ontent.css
I don't use Firefox, I happen to prefer Safari, so I just use this style sheet (download it, save it) and it blocks > 80% of ads. -
Re:Actual figures...
I think it's this out there
... just a guess, though. -
Re:Science Blog
Pop-up free for me, but adblock did block two javascript items which is probably why. With a combination of adblock and userContent.css in firefox I'm still pop-up ad free.
You might want to try something similar. If things get really desparate, using an blocking HOSTS file can help as well. -
Re:AdBlock
I also use CSS selection and hostperm image blocking alongside Adblock. See instructions here: http://gozer.org/mozilla/ad_blocking/
