That's why you have to make it incredibly easy, and offer rewards, and fun: http://www.grapheety.com/

This was in the New York TimesI wonder why no one mentioned this is a quote from the New York Times? I saw it yesterday syndicated in my local paper.
I'm surprised they didn't even mention the other big players: http://www.grapheety.com , or http://www.plazes.com.
It is going to be a whole new world once the world is casually tagged with stories, and pictures, etc. Where one can explore without even going outdoors. Personally I think Grapheety is the best at that...

Old News
This has been done by countless sites, including panaramio, flickr.com/maps and http://www.grapheety.com the latter of which is probably the best.

Seperate people
I have found on my site http://www.grapheety.com that we have had the most success seperating these tasks all together. Even though I come from a usability background, when I am coding I have a hard time doing it 'the hard way'. We have a designer who works on this project full-time who does all designs graphically, then we compromise on how to implement them. It has been a great relationship.

editors can be boughtI think the trust would go down if it had a single editor. They can be centralized, and bought out like MS is doing, and the likes. I think they need a voting system sort of like http://www.grapheety.com. This would allow people to filter maybe by quality.
I think also the original contributor should have some moderation rights, but not ultimate... Maybe based on your level, you can moderate, or over-moderate other people?

How is that different than sites like this
How is that really different than sites like this, except for the angle: ? http://www.grapheety.com

Re:SmugMug
I rarely share photos, but when I do I put them in places where people can find them in some context. I'd rather use them to help others... http://www.grapheety.com Plus its more fun...

Re:Wikipedia and Internet-TopologyWikipedia is great. However, I have a fear that it will be commercialized and taken over soon.
Any project, that lets the people tell the story is incredible.
Where Wikipedia tells the story of history, Grapheety tells the story of the current globe.

Re:Killed??
On that same note, I went here: http://grapheety.com/?story=107&zoom=12 to talk to these people waiting in line for a ps3. Someone tried to break into the store for it. Checkout the nuts in front, that should really be a crime.

Re:Here are the top 10.
I would say Grapheety is in the top 10. Probably the most unique idea of any of these.

I think Grapheety is probably among the top 20
This site is probably among the best. In the "Actually Useful" social networking class.

Can you believe these people who waited all night in line? What a crappy release. They loved getting photographed though.

A good application
I think this is a neat application of Google Mapping. Its nice seeing the API being used, as I'm a mapping fan on sites like http://www.grapheety.com and others.
