Since I started posting my little songs up on the net I have contacted by BMI.. I am going to join, but only because they can help me if an artist took something i have written and recorded it/ changed it. etc and proffited without compensation or permision from me..

You should be very careful with your contract terms. If you sign away your copy-rights you may not be allowed to license your own music how you see fit. Hence you may not be able to post your little songs on the net anymore.

If all you need is a lawyer to defend your own copyrights you should just retain your own counsel when an issue arises.

As for music, my tastes are different. I cannot find many free music like trance and dance to download (not streaming due to dial-up). Maybe I am not looking at the right places on the Internet. I tried mp3.com, but their selections stink.

Hmm, actually I have found the opposite to be true. There is a lot of electronic music available for free because all it takes is a computer and time. Music that uses a lot of expensive, real instruments tends to be harder to find.

Part of the problem with "free" stuff that is truly free is that people don't know about it, assume by default it must be crap,

Unfortunately the vast majority IS crap (although this could be said of professional music as well though possibly to a lesser extent).

Popularity metrics are one way to try and combat this. It also helps to have an active community or a webmaster who will try and do a bit of filtering.

I allow anybody to submit to my project but also spend a lot of time scouring the net looking for content that doesn't suck. I think I have put up some pretty good stuff lately and there is more to come.

wow, I just wanted to re-iterate this. If i wasn't busy whoring my project I would make this my sig. Really, it is one of those things you read that kinda give you the shivers becaue they are so friggin right.
