Funny, because for over 20 years, the CDC was prohibited from studying gun violence. Yes, the NRA has bought legislation that prevents any money the CDC gets from going into gun violence research.

So obviously the CDC did not conduct the research, because they're not allowed to. They're allowed to contract it out for no money, which basically means really self-interested researchers (i.e., industry) gets to write an opinion piece about it.

Your article is dated to 2013, and the CDC has not conducted any gun violence research since 1996 (Dickey Amendment).

And all my article states is the AMA is lobbying for its appeal since 2016, because one really cannot make any sort of judgements without proper research. Of course, the NRA opposes this, almost as if they're worried about the real truth, that it might be the next cigarettes, or leaded gasoline, or climate change, or something. Or it might be because their whole set of mottoes end up being lies...

That used to be the case, as others here have explained. After sandy hook, Obama made an executive order to give them 10 million for research, it was big at the time because they assumed it would confirm their beliefs.

Then it was never heard from again due to the results of the study.

Oh wait. Yeah, I can live with the 1/10,000 chance because THOSE THINGS NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPEN EXCEPT IN YOUR IMAGINATION. Or do you think the "liberal media" is covering up the hundreds of thousands of people who use guns to prevent themselves from being stabbed in our (incredibly safe) country every day?

Actually it turns out that is generally true according to the recent CDC study. (I don't know about an actual cover-up, but clearly these stories are not being reported on.)

Interesting how both sides were basically surprised when we all just sat down to really look at the problem. They both had a spin to it, but nothing really fit the dialog from either side.

We have failed at our responsibility to safely possess firearms. We do not deserve them now.

Ohh, I don't know.. maybe because in New York I couldn't have my Springfield XDM? The cops are not your friend. They are not there to protect you; they are there to clean up the mess. And yes, I'll use the cliche: the police are there in minutes when seconds count. In addition, I don't understand law enforcement needs full-auto variants of the AR-15 since many cops can't shoot worth a shit anyway, let alone handle full auto (which is largely used for suppressive fire in war). We used to out-shoot them all the time when I was in the military, and I laugh at them now at our local range. A couple of departments mandate a couple of hundred rounds a practice per year; the average in my crew is about 1000-2000 a month, minimum (some of these guys who have money are running through 6k a month).. of 'real' calibers (not counting .22 LR) and we're 'casual' handgunners.

As for shotguns (because you just know somebody's going to go there..).. let me see you clear corners with a shotgun like I can my semi-auto pistol. Just let me see a shotgun muzzle coming around a corner.. and if you do the 'come around then bring it up' trick you're already in my tritium 3-dot sights. Mozambique Drill in effect.

Bottom line is: whatever the average flatfoot has access to as a duty weapon, I should have access to. The criminals have access to EVERYTHING. My weapons are secure, but if you manage to break into my house while I'm not there and use a plasma cutter to open my gun safe, then the problem is you, not me.

Please note: I'm all for background checks, closing the gunshow loophole, and deveoping a mechanism that keeps the crazies away from firepower, as well as enchancing penalties for people who do not keep their weapons secured.

I don't know where you live in Texas, but wherever it is (unless it's Austin) just stay in the closet about your views on weaponry. It will save you serious emotional distress. I've lived in Texas and Arizona, and we'd have openly mocked you. Maybe even made fun of you. ;)

Only if the city is a mere 180 meters (600 yards) "East" to "West" *. Nobody needs to be a gun nut to know city buildings' walls and gravity bring bullets to a stop sooner than you seem to think.

Even if everyone were our world's single 1.5-mile-record-holding war sniper, that killing shot had to compensate for 6 seconds of gravity and use a special long-distance rifle. An object (bullet) falls 177 meters in that time. The sniper managed to shave that downward path to only 120m. At 3 meters per floor, the bad guys need to secure a window from a 40 to 60 story building and/or shoot well computed arches into the sky. Average street tugs have training for close range guns, shotguns and maybe machine guns (ha!) and none of those tools are known for sniper-level ranges. Cities tend to be
