Misfeature
Um, so what? Seriously so frigging what? The original intent of a lot of things aren't what they're used for today.
The "so what" is that it IS a drawback in a multitude of ways. If you want to call it a feature it really is a form of misfeature. It makes the phone larger and more cumbersome, wastes space, costs money, is ugly, and it isn't even the primary purpose of a bezel. Furthermore it's not necessarily the best way to solve the actual problem of gripping the phone securely since there are other ways to solve that problem.
It appears that other people do want the bezel or you wouldn't have needed to post this.
No they want to be able to comfortably grip the phone without triggering the touch screen. Using the bezel for this is merely one way to accomplish the goal and perhaps not even the best way.

Re:What's the breakdown
Not true. Some of them were also eaten by lions.

This phenomenon closely related to:
The bogon.
Seriously, can't anyone at Tech Review spot the flaw here? A tube still has more than one dimension. Even if you managed to create a chain of single carbon atoms, you'd still have multiple dimensions, in that the atoms comprising the chain are not infinitely short and infinitely flat.
Bah. Sensationalist nonsense non-news.

Gorilla Arm?
It hardly sounds logical to insist that keyboards and mice will be replaced with touch screens which are doubling as your display.
Unless you expect to put your screen in your lap and cramp your neck looking down, or separate the display from the touch surface, this will not replace keyboard and mouse interactivity entirely.
There is a problem in that human arms are not designed to be held away from the body for extended time periods. Keyboards work well simply because you can comfortably hold your arms in that position for extended periods while looking ahead instead of down (and if it's in your lap and the screen is straight ahead, what good is a touch screen if you aren't looking at it?)
See Gorilla Arm: http://www.hacker-dictionary.com/terms/gorilla-arm
Try this to see the effect:
Hold your preferred arm in front of your body and point with only your index finger away from your chest. Now draw small figure-eights and make a pushing motion like you are using an ATM. Now do this for multiple hours. Yeah, didn't think so.
I only see this being viable as an additional option useful for some applications like CAD or 3d Modeling work, but not as a primary navigation tool for my OS or ESPECIALLY web browser. I really don't feel the necessity to fake turning pages with my entire arm while reading document on my computer.

Reap what ya sowThis is a nice thread - it's why i get slightly uncomfortable reading all the "stupid user" pages.
If we treat our users as lusers we may sometimes find that we are them when making a call to our "service" provider.
Most religions (not just that of the eight Crusade's) have golden-rule sayings such as "treat others as you'd like to be treated yourself" - it's good advice, you reap what you sow
