Re:EMP
http://hacknmod.com/hack/diy-e... would do it, and probably be highly dangerous to anything else along the beam -- such as a jetliner.

Re:Why is there an assumption of privacy?
I wonder how difficult it would be to *ahem*....de-activate this tech on the plate?
I mean, maybe the power/battery accidently gets disconnected? Maybe a rock or hammer accidentally smashes some critical part of the plate system? What if the plate accidentally passed in front of some random, activated HERF gun...?
I think this plate has an LCD screen that displays your license plate number while you're driving, and public service announcements (and ads of course!) while you're parked.
If you disable it, it will be immediately obvious.
But my question is, do I have to buy another expensive plate when a rock (or vandal) cracks the screen, or will the state pay for it since they are the ones that decided that the electronic plates would 'save money'? They are claiming that the new plates will save money because renewals will be automatically sent to the plate rather than needing someone to mail out a sticker, but I have a hard time believing that this electronic device is cheaper than a metal license plate that can last decades with the only maintenance being putting on a new sticker every year.

Sigh
Time for me to make a camera-blinding hat, perhaps..?

Re:Not that hard, really
Well, just wear one of those high powered infrared LED hats that block out your face from cctv...and voila...they can't see who it is when the search through all that video footage...

Re:Absolutely flawless
Not always.
Some modern cell phones have fantastic low light capability simply because they know that LED Camera flashes are so weak. But you can counter the good low light cameras with an LED hat: http://hacknmod.com/hack/blind-cameras-with-an-infrared-led-hat/

Re:I want one!
Yeah there are way too many cheap/DIY options to be spending the cost of a car on a 3D printer for home use.
I particularly like this one:

Re:Next up...
The technology to uniquely identify and authenticate an individual is going to get better, and it is going to become harder for the average person to forge and use an alternative identity.
I have no intention of "forging" an identity, my aim is anonymity.
Unfortunately, the same technology that is being developed for authentication will also be applied to identification and tracking.Sounds like the time for the IR LED Hat is quickly approaching.

Easy to avoid!
Well this seems fairly easy: - Get one of those INFRARED HATS and wear them around town: http://hacknmod.com/hack/blind-cameras-with-an-infrared-led-hat/ - After you park at a meter or illegally, cover your license plates and window registration They are probably doing this to cut costs AND increase profitability (no more foot soldiers and wrote more summonses!), but if the minority starts protecting themselves thusly, there won't be much they can do about it since they will have pulled the foot soldiers.

Re:Weapon?
Funnily enough someone came out with this little toy. Not exactly a killing machine but not bad. There are several others too.
Portable Railguns are more difficult due to the need for sustained power, but it is fairly trivial to make a charging circuit and use capacitors to provide the field. So, why doesn't someone take this and up its power with a backpack or something into a real killing machines - well something that currently a small explosive charge to accelerate a projectile can do much better.

microcontroller projects
i would spend at least a couple of weeks having them build and program some microcontroller projects.
here's a place to start: http://hacknmod.com/hack/top-40-arduino-projects-of-the-web/Arduino is a physical computing platform based on a simple open hardware design for a single-board microcontroller, with embedded I/O support and a standard programming language. The Arduino programming language is based on Wiring and is essentially C/C++ (several simple transformations are performed before passing to avr-gcc). The goal of the Arduino project is to make tools available that are accessible, low-cost, low capital investment, flexible and easy-to-use for artists and hobbyists. Particularly those who might not otherwise have access to more sophisticated controllers that require more complicated tools.

Blind Them!!!
Here's a neat idea. I really want to do the same with my license plate for the stupid redlight cameras in my city, but was thinking a few strong camera strobes with an IR filter set up as a slave flash would work better.
http://www.hacknmod.com/hack/blind-cameras-with-an-infrared-led-hat/
This IR hat hack is cool, but needs to be modified to regulate the current through the LEDs or they'll burn out quickly. -
WTF?
Surely this stuff should be on the idle section of slashdot!
If I want DIY servo controlled stuff I can go to http://www.hackaday.com/ or http://www.hackedgadgets.com/ or http://www.hacknmod.com/ or even http://www.instructables.com/
