Good point about checksums
When I bought the boxed Redhat 7.0 Standard edition - everytime I did a kernel recompile - messages would alert me that at least 10 checksums did not match! This is a little alarming considering I plunked down $70 for an official retail version [flagship] distribution.
Moral of the story: don't walk away when hacking the kernel (and don't follow Redhat's kernel recompiling instructions either in their own documentation). Do it the standard way and read the output! -
Another page to check outAlthough not completely current, HardcoreLinux reviews all the major browsers for Linux. It may be worth referencing since the other page seems to be Slashdotted. Here it is:

More Distributed ProjectsIf you've got cpu cycles to burn, why not use it on a worthwhile project like Genome@home, which strives to improve understanding on the evolution of natural genomes and how they operate. They even have a proven track record. There is also Popular Power, which continues working towards a more effective influenza vaccine even though they're out of business.
A listing of notable distributed computing projects are here - (http://www.hardcorelinux.com/distributed-computin g.htm for all you goatse.cx traumatized).

It only makes senceWell, considering Aliens devised the internet to gather the collective consciousness of the human race, they should be entitled to some civil rights damnit! All that hardcore porn and beastiality we flippantly take forgranted of every single day was made possible by our alien bretheren.

Game ports lure Windows gamersI've seen people convert to Linux solely because of the Quake III port (which I own), so it's not just Linux users who are the target market, it's gamers in general who are looking for something a little different. As for free and/or GPL'd games which unpaid developers toil late into the night over, they are part of the equation too. Games like Jump n Bump and Car World show promise - and who knows - these uncompensated and largely ignored developers may in the future design the next big thingTM.

Fast boot-up? Recompile the kernel! If you want Linux to boot up fast, reconfigure the kernel. Include in the kernel only the devices you need regularly, and have any other devices as modular so you're not keeping that device in memory constantly. After doing so myself, Slackware boots up like Too much Coffee Man after a three-finger expresso, and easily kicks the snot out of W2k.
Mind you, LinuxBIOS is a great project I hope will continue to develop, but may be superflous for most dualbooters.
For those who want a kernel compiling howto for reference, try the Kernel Hacking Howto.

3 good comicstrips...I recommend the always unsettling The Parking Lot is Full, Sam Brown's brilliant explodingdog and the strange urban comicstrip called diesel sweeties where Clango the robot gets it on with the ladies! Worth digging into the archives.
You can check them out here.

Re:Searching TechniqueI'm the webmaster of a Linux website and AOLsearch ranks me number one under the keywords "big flabby butt". Well, unless someone's willing to take a picture of my fat ass, the visitor is going to be sorely dissapointed!

INSIDE GNOME AND KDE DESKTOPSInside Gnome and KDE Desktops will give you the skinny on GNOME and KDE.

My remark may be regarded as flamebait...
but if you know how to use your index finger and a mouse simultaneously, you're well on your way to mastering KDE and Gnome desktop managers. To gain a deeper understanding of Linux you need to learn command line. It's quick and empowering, and allows you to customise your operating environment in ways you could never when confined to a gui.
As for learning resources, HardcoreLinux is a site that doesn't rehash moldy tutorials and howtos. The content is exclusive to HardcoreLinux and is easy to follow. The book Sam's Teach Yourself Linux in 24 hours is also a good learning tool. It's got the right mix of gui and command line lessons and is perfect for a beginner. -
Conversion
A program that converts between the rpm, dpkg, stampede slp, and slackware tgz file formats with ease is the little-hyped Alien . Apt is swish - especially now when it understands a major file format like rpm - but it would be the cats ass if it had the package conversion capabilities of Alien. Apt should also imitate package management routines like Encap and GNU STOW, pm's that essentially isolate packages, installing programs in their own directories and ensuring cleaner and easier removal. With those killer features, Apt would indeed be the Linux standard, regardless of the distribution your using.

.02The "Got yet another idiot" email report back to the author would suggest it's the work of a Linux hater, and not just a hacker with a proof-of-concept example. Odd how the Pro-Linux trojan hasn't been documented in CERT/CC, and only anti-virus companies have identified it.
This Linux security howto may be of interest to some, so i'll humbly submit it:
