Re:I never understood
No, the FreeBSD Foundation actually paid the cash to get FreeBSD certified for Java. This means the jdk/jre package has to pass a series of tests. Then, and only then, you can distribute java and have your OS approved. The problem is that Sun has changed the licensing for Java5 and a new agreement hasn't yet been reached.

Re:The new beta is awesome.
There's no such thing as free lunch, economics 101. The fact that you didn't pay a single $ for the software you use doesn't mean it didn't cost money to develop. Someone has to pay for that, either the developers have another job, or they get paid to develop free software.
Some software cannot be developed with the open source business model, it doesn't work. I'm sure the Opera guys would love to release their software as OSS if they could make money another day. Other niche products won't be OSS any time soon, e.g. Softimage|XSI, Maya, etc. And no, Bender doesn't even come close to them. When will some people understand that not all software has to be free? I don't care what Stallman says, it's not true.

Re:Ah. Blissful clean architecture.
You're forgetting a couple of things. First Linux has tons of payed people working on it, and it's backed by SGI and IBM. NetBSD is 90% volunteer driven with some of the committers being Wasabi employees. Thats' a huge difference because Linux is only a kernel, NetBSD is the whole thing. And still, they've managed to make one of the finest Unix-like operating systems.
Like I've said, Linux is just the kernel. You need the GNU libc guys to port their machdep code to a new arch as well. How many distros support all those arches anyway? I know the Debian guys do support most of them but none of the mainstream distros do. So, in effect, running NetBSD might be more practical, since those versions are more actively supported. Running MMU-less is almost useless, since you lose memory protection, you might as well just run FreeDOS then.

Re:Doesn't Matter
You must be thinking of FreeBSD developers like Poul-Henning Kamp and Dag-Erling Smorgrav. The latter is the most annoying and arrogant asshole I've ever met.
Now mod me down, why should I care.

Scott, why is it that you never never manage to make a decent release? Murray was a much better releng engineer than you've been. And, since you seem to like motorbikes as well : FUCK YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE!

Go back to your home brewed beer dude, and let the gown ups write the kernel code.
Several fortune 100 companies have already migrated from FreeBSD to HawkinsOS. How many enterprise ready operating systems have you written? That's what I thought.

Stop pasting that crap. And you must be one of those smelly spics, since you can't even tell a comma from a period. It's 2,000.

Re:FreeBSD 5.3 RELEASE Released
This iso will need to be rerolled because Scott Long still hasn't managed to do a decent release in 2 years. He should have merged the gvinum patches, instead of calling a buggy OS -RELEASE.
I've noticed a big decline in quality since the big players (Dyson, Dillon, Smith, Hubbard) left the project. The quality in the 5.3 series is abysmal. Running 5-STABLE in production systems is suicidal, a sure recipe for disaster.
Hopefully some guy decided to put up and released a better alternative.

Re:Time Based releases work
OpenBSD's development model is a bit different. For example, snapshots of current are created every other week or so, and those usually work fine. FreeBSD 5.x has gone broken for almost 1 month at times. They make more evolutionary changes (yes, the switch to ELF was the exception). All the development is done in CVS, no hidden perforce repositories that cannot be accessed by anyone but the coder himself.
FreeBSD 5-STABLE is 2 years late and has about 30 serious bugs that need to be fixed. This is the price to pay for being too arrogant. But remember, Matt Dillon warned you about it almost 2 years ago.

Re:Private message for Mr. Hawkins
IMBECILE!. How is a message sent by other person talking about gvinum's bug a troll? I didn't even write that message.
Let me guess, you're that annoying AOL guy who keeps trolling the freebsd-questions mailing list, right? But you're not fooling anyone. We all know that TM4526@aol.com is no other than Doug-Erlang Smoorgreff.

Who modded this cheap copy & paste up?
For your info, the original article was by Paul Webb, and it was pulled because it contains lots of factual errors. It's a troll, mod down.

Re:RTFA -- It's Quite Interesting
There are two things I'd like to point out.
IMHO calling it -STABLE is a disservice to the users community, specially considering the huge TO-DO list of bugs and problems that should have been fixed before calling it -RELEASE.
Second, there's the issue of perforce development. This is still a problem when some people keep private p4 repos and don't commit to CVS for months. Some people have suggested looking at svn and arch. A free software project shouldn't rely on perforce for its development.

Re:Complete success!
Jeff Roberson, the only person who understands the ULE code has been away for some months. I have patches that fix 2/3 of the bugs (some of the PREEMPTION stuff is nasty), and I'll happily donate them as soon as I see a public apology by DES and PHK.

Re:old logo was hideous
Which part of the Linux development process do you mean? The 2.4 VM fiasco? Or all the security problems found in 2.6? It's getting better now that IBM/Intel/SGI are putting real engineers to work on it. There's still a lot of code in the Linux kernel that is simply a piece of shit.

Re:More corporate looking
Wasabi employs half of the NetBSD developers that live in the US so it's hardly a surprise that they'll have some influence. Is that a bad thing? I don't think so. In the same way Yahoo has something to say about FreeBSD development, since they sponsor it and have some committers working for them (Bill 'Turbo Flamage' Fumerola, for example).

Re:better logo, yes
And this has benefited both camps. Now we have OpenBSD. The same has happened to FreeBSD, btw, two times: DragonFlyBSD and HawkinsOS. If only those fucktards DES and PHK would apologize the Hawkins patches could be merged in.

not to mention the great support HawkinsOS has
;) And you can buy it for only 1000$ if you order 8 copies. Quick, send the money now. The first 100 customers will have a spetial offer from one of our Nigerian contacts in the former royal family! -
Re:FreeBSD 5.X issues
No, get your facts right. When I found out some bugs in the usb subsystem and in some other parts of the kernel I tried contacting some of the developers. Because once and again they kept neglecting the issues I described saying it couldn't be reproduced on their systems I started working on my own patches, which is what eventually lead to HawkinsOS.
Now, even after e-mailing them the diffs they still didn't want to listen to me. What am I expected to do? I was insulted in private mail, my server was attacked. All I'm asking for is an apology, that's all, and I'll release my patchset under a BSD license.
-
Re:Scheduler?
Jesus, I thought we had already gotten over all this. The fact is, a company wanting to deploy FreeBSD servers needs support. HawkinsOS does provide support, that's why it's enterprise ready, and why companies buy my product. FreeBSD 5.3 is not yet ready, my system is.
If Dag-Erling and Poul-Henning hadn't been acting like a couple of condescending a*holes I'd have released my patches (more than 8,000 lines of code so far) under a BSD license. That's all I wanted, respect. I didn't get any, so no patches for you. You still can buy my product and get support, of course.
-
Re:FreeBSD 5.X issues
Look, I've been doing consulting work for nearly 15 years. About the site, I had to put up an old copy because after that thread several FreeBSD members broke into my network and nearly deleted everything. I'm 75% sure that it's the work of Dag-Erling and his friends, as most of the packets and exploit attempts (until they succeded) were coming from Norway and Denmark.
I've sold 2,000 copies and made money off *my* work. How many copies has the FreeBSD foundation sold? Oh, that's what I thought, becuase 5.3 is not usable in a production environment, not without my patches. And guess what, they won't be getting my patches unless I see public apology from DES and PHK.
Support my operating system!

Re:what's the status with usb 2.0 ?
All the good hackers left FreeBSD long time ago, Dyson, Smith, Dillon, you name them. What's left is some second tier code monkeys you can't code their way out of a paper bag. That's why each consecutive BETA/RC of 5.3 introduces new bugs. Their solution is usually some sort of crap workaround (like in the usb keyboard case). USB 2.0 doesn't work properly in FreeBSD. However, you might be interested in HawkinsOS instead, which fixes all the bugs present in FreeBSD 5.3 and is 100% free of people Dag-Erlong Smorgruff.
