Re: The Obama Administration
This.
Recall the discovery of the Higgs boson?
Cern is THE gathering place for a major scientific population and supporting roles for related workers.
That could have been the USA.
Trump is déjà vu all over again.

Re: Hmm
I'm not going to claim to have all the answers, but..
working in cern, a european city.
I did not realize that CERN, The European Organization for Nuclear Research was a city.

Mod parent up. Sloppy editing of science articles.
Wow! I'm amazed that an organization could make the mistake of calling the hadron collider a "hardon collider".

Re:interstellar mission
Nope, anti-matter is not just a theory. It has been confirmed to exist in the first half of the last century: https://home.cern/topics/antim...
Antimatter can be used as very efficient rocket fuel, so you would have to carry less weight.
The problem however is how to do efficient production of antimatter.
Also, you would still have to carry some kind of propellant with you.

Re:Value of CERN
Of course, the CERN is doing a lot of more things than just discovering new particles. Look here for example for an overview of experiments: https://home.cern/about/experi...
The particles are of course the highlights, but it isn't the fault of the LHC if there are no particles at the energies that the LHC can reach.
Either way, CERN is very valuable to physics.

Re:Only an academic...
"The Web" and "The Internet" are two different things. "The Internet" has ties to the US government. "The Web" was created by CERN, to make it easier for scientists to collaborate and share results.
