Re:Western parallels...
There are some people who say the opposite about Israel. As for "right wing" voters, the breakdown of the country shows the majority of states are republican majority, but the large electoral holding states are a majority democrat. When it comes to a presidential election the odds are fairly equal in either direction.
As for Guantanamo Bay under the geneva convention (article 2): ...
Although one of the Powers in conflict may not be a party to the present Convention, the Powers who are parties thereto shall remain bound by it in their mutual relations. They shall furthermore be bound by the Convention in relation to the said Power, if the latter accepts and applies the provisions thereof. ...
I would say in regard to men who deceptively bomb without regard to civilian life, they most certainly do not feel bound by the Geneva convention. In fact I would say many acts of human atrocities have been committed by the so called "insurgent" forces. The public dismemberment of Non-Coms comes to mind as particularly disgusting.
Also, if we were after oil (which IMO would have been a better reason than for quasi-goodvsevil imperialism) why the hell do I pay $2.60 at the pump. Why? Because Iraq was allowed to rejoin OPEC.
I believe Bush has a higher goal. I don't known what it is nor do I even care to participate in in-depth speculation. All I do know is that Iraq and Israel, two democracies friendly to the US in the M-E would provide a foothold for the future destruction/revolution of the dictatorship/monarchies in the surrounding oil rich countries. -
BBC makes an unbiased report? NO! NEVER!
If you follow the major news, you'd know that they are very fast loosing their reputation as a source of information and are becoming regarded as a source of opinion.
British media, in general, seems to have the worst intgerity of all "free" press.
Feel free to mod me as a Troll before reading my sources. -
Re:Check your factsPlease read this. No, really. Read it. Then tell me, with a straight face, that AP and Reuters are good, honest news reporters who merely tell the truth (that Israel is bad at everything it does, etc etc).
A news agency that describes a terrorist bombing in an Israeli nightclub under the headline "Bomb Mars Historic Day For Palestinians" is no agency I am going to trust. Neither should you.

Re:Check your factsWell, apparently most of the links offered by the other replies to this are from pro-Palestinian sources. Here's an interesting read, with full references, that debunks much of the Palestinian propaganda that is being fed by AP, Reuters, etc.
I admit that these are Jewish sites and pro-Israel. They are, however, as close as I've seen to being objective and sticking to historical facts. (I am Jewish and Israeli.)

And for up-to-the-minute information on the latest news, see HonestReporting. Their newsletter offers some fascinating insight on Mideast events and how they are portrayed in the media, most often biased in favor of the Palestinians.
*sigh*
.. Can the name "Israel" ever be mentioned here without waking all the bigots and spurring a political debate? This doesn't happen if the country mentioned is, say, China.phozz

Oh God I missed the "of" at first.
Don't worry, George Bush will see that you were right the first time! He'll get rid of those nasty Iraqis, hoarding all that sweet, sweet oil for your SUV. While he's busy destabilizing the Middle East, more terrorist attacks may be prompted here in the US, and North Korea (you know, that crazy guy who threatened war?) will go forgotten while he builds an arsenal of long-range nuclear weapons.
Here's a helpful score card:
Iraq: Tiny dictator that hasn't attacked anyone since Bush's daddy while trying to steal Kuwait over 10 years ago. Has short range missiles that don't fly too straight. Leader enjoys gassing rebels (especially when Reagan was paying for it), torture, killing family members, and long walks along the perimeter. Problem to nearest neighbors that claim to be "friends" of America (you know, those guys that fund and house terrorists, pay blood money to families of "martyrs", spew hatred of America in their schools, etc.)
North Korea: Tiny dictator that has nuclear weapons or is very close. Has medium range missiles and will have long range missiles capable of hitting American targets. The leader also enjoys starving and torturing his subjects, and saber rattling with an eye toward actual global war
Moderators: this is NOT flamebait. It is a troll. Learn the difference! -

A fair chunk of the newspapers in the interior of British Columbia are owned by one man (I forget his name).
