We was referring to Moran. We can't all be Morans, he meant.

Re:Government Secrecy
I agree with you, specifically with some of the details coming out about wire taps. What's difficult though, is the politics being played along with some of these sensitive issues. Too many people are jumping on the "Nobody Knew" bandwagon, because they didn't know. In most cases, there are oversight committees that do know about them. If you are worried about those issues, email your representatives and ask them for more information. http://www.house.gov/htbin/zipfind/

Re:Spinning out of Control-Atlas Burns.
You do realize that the US as a whole has grown wealthier, not poorer, right?
The Ultra-rich have accumulated more wealth, yes, this is true .
News stories have been done on the vanishing middle class :
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A342 35-2004Sep19.html
The Stock Market correction of 2000 and then 9-11, was more massive then I think you
can imagine, it bankrupted most of the major airlines in the US .
Just now we have risen to the point we were at before 9-11, aka
the same spot we were at after the DOT COM crash .
Lay offs were literally in the millions .
Do you understand " MILLIONS "
They like to make like it has "recovered", but all that has really happened is
a shell game . It's all bullshit, just like Enron, Global Crossing, MCI, Ad naseum .
Greenspan knows this, thus his warning on a housing bubble .
Excerpt: ( 4 paragraphs up from the last )
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2004/040 4.wallace-wells.html
That job fell to Greenspan: Finally, on Feb. 24, testifying before the Senate Banking Committee, he came clean about the risks of the housing market, in a speech reminiscent of his 1996 warning about "irrational exuberance" in the stock market. In his familiar, glum posture, his bald head slouching low over the table, he warned that the GSEs weren't just unstable, but also posed a "systemic risk" to the economy of the United States. He suggested debt caps, to reduce Fannie and Freddie's role in the market, and urged stricter regulation.
These EXACT tactics have played out before, but we refuse to look back to 1929 .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_depression#Caus es_of_the_Great_Depression
They want to maximize the profit, raise the stock price, lower overhead ...Ad naseum .
I go back to the simplicity method .
If anyone can do any job here for less, then no citizen will be doing the job if the
bottomline is all to consider .
corporate funded slums to house the visa workers, because they aren't even paid enough to
afford the housing that the citizens have to pay for .

Re:A perfect world
But who's to say that the Aulstralians should have so much more money, per capita, than the Chinese?
Money is a fake system, and it is a delicate balancing act .
No tangible object represents the paper money after the world went off the gold standard .
For the chinese to have more money per capita all they need to do is stay their current
course, and crush the economies of the US and EU .
This is well under way .
All manufacturing will cease in the US in the not too distant future if the protections
for it are 100% lifted .
GM recently closed 9 of their major facilities across the US, as Delphi is a supplier,
the domino effect has already begun and they followed suit.
The ppl that had jobs in those towns who cannot find work may declare bankruptcy, and
lose their homes, cars, and pay what little money they have left in legal fees .
This starts a housing bubble situation as predicted by Greenspan .
For the US workers to "compete" we would have to trash most US labor laws, and work
for half what we do now, and could not afford to pay our current bills/taxes .
Massive deflation, somewhat like the Great Depression would likely occur .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_depression#Caus es_of_the_Great_Depression
If all major US corporations push for this race to the bottom, then they
will indeed find the bottom .
Corporate Cannibalism is what is alikened to IMHO .
This woman's story tells the tale well .

Re:Spinning out of Control-Atlas Burns.
An asymptotical narrowing of wealth disparity between the countries
With close to 3 billion ppl living in poverty by US/EU standards, to "equalize"
the pay scale, property values will plumment, and the currency will be devalued
to levels that deflation will cripple the US/EU .
I cannot say it enough, any job can be done by someone else from another country
for less, and they are more than eager to do it .
If every job in your country was systematically done by a corporate owned visa worker,
none of the citizens would have jobs .
How the hell would anyone pay their bills ???
I am not talking about one EU member working in a sister "state"
I am talking about corporate slums like in the bradford riots .
Like what this women is talking about .
http://wwwa.house.gov/international_relations/108/ sha020404.htm
If you still try to sell this, then your just on the cash cow and
sucking away at the udder til the tit runs dry .
The US, the place everyone loves to hate, and wants to work !
Hypocrisy !

Re:A perfect world
Bzzzt! Return to Econ 101.
The local economy = everything produced locally. More skilled workers = more produced locally = economy grows.
Yet again,
The shell game, you can get a different job, ad naseum .
How many degrees will you have to get to "keep getting new jobs",
When the old one is "SOLD OUT" .
When does the cost of the new degrees exceed the pay from
restarting your career everytime the "corpocracy" decides to
sell your job to ANYONE who will work for less .
Under this theory, if they can do any job for less, then they
will do ALL jobs for less, and thus their will be no jobs for
workers that are citizens .
Your grandfather or great grandfather may have died for your
country, but that doesn't matter anymore .
Business as usual, the bottom line is to be fed .
Greed wins again .
http://www.engology.com/E-News1375.htm
Now, wihile said deluge certainly won't the devastate local economy, it certainly can devastate those displaced workers foolish enough to cling to the idea they are somehow owed a job in their former industry.
I don't need a job, I own my own company now .
I am not so moronic that I cannot see that total replacement of all citizens by
L1 visa workers living in corporate owned slums sending most of their pay back
to their home country would have a negative impact .
During this time my and other London guest worker's corporate housing was frequently without heat, hot water and electricity.
http://wwwa.house.gov/international_relations/108/ sha020404.htm
I do not blame the ppl of other nations for wanting to get money to take care
of their families, but I think they and their country would be better off in the long run
fixing their country rather than picking the low hanging fruit off their neighbor's trees .
Peace,

Re:Who does the law protect?
I too am waiting to see Google take this one all the way to the Supreme Court.
I think we need to think a bit bigger than just setting some sort of limited precedent here. Companies like this live on the threat of a lawsuit being remotely credible. So, as long as the patent office continues to issue patents regardless of merit, then the problem will not go away. Sure sometimes big companies act with impunity to other people's intelectual property and it is right that they are sued, but seemingly more often these days it really is the little guy that is just trying to pull a scam on the big company for a few bucks. With a patent office like we have now (and have had for the past couple decades) we will continue to have a breeding ground for parasites that add nothing to our base of knowledge, but rather simply serve to restrain true innovation and thus the economy under a threat of nearly baseless lawsuits.
If the judgement of the patent clerks cannot be trusted then put a hard cap on the number of patents that are issued each year. Perhaps even have the patent office rate the patents that they issue for originality and scope to make it clearer to the courts when companies over reach the original scope of the patent. And the patent office should be continuously reviewing patents that have been issued in view to revoke them. And there should be an easy and innexpensive way to challenge a patent without suing in the Federal courts. Regardless, we are the ones that need to put pressure on Congress and the President to reform the patent office because issuing so many bad patents does nothing but hurt the economy as a whole.

Ever heard of EMAIL?
I know, it's just sooooooooooooooooo hard to get in contact with your rep.
http://www.house.gov/writerep/
I must admit, most of the people I hear trumpeting this '[insert aspersion of choice] in Washington' crap have scarcely bothered to contact them, yet have the gall to blame their reps for not representing them. If you're concerned that any rep but _yours_ is ignoring you, well, you suffer from a fundamental misunderstanding of how democracy works.
Truly amazing that people expect representative democracy to work when they don't engage their representatives--and it's not like you need to be told how to do so. Chances are, their office is withing f'ing walking distance of your house. If operating pen and paper, telephone or email are all too complex and mysterious for you and you're too lazy to travel a mile to speak in person, I can't imagine what sort of contribution you could possibly make, so it's probably best that you've passively excluded yourself from the process. -
Re:Well...That's funny, because Rep. Howard Coble, who was the sponsor of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, calls himself a Republican.
The DMCA passed with bi-partisan support. Congress was one thing, the Senate was another, as far as control by each party went at the time. The President was a Democrat, but was wasting an enormous amount of time fighting utterly ridiculous claims of "sexual harassment", "Whitewater fraud", and finally "Lying about something that was irrelevent to the first case but was brought up in that court anyway in order to create embarassment." I think it's sad he didn't stand up on the job, but I wouldn't draw any conclusions about it having anything to do with cozying up to Hollywood.
It is false to use a lack of Democratic opposition to the DMCA to pretend that a claim Republicans support this shit is false. It is 100% true that Republicans support extreme copyright laws. Both the DMCA and the Sonny Bono (R) Copyright Act were Republican proposals, with bi-partisan support.

Re:There's some sort of joke....
Oh, there's a great deal more he could do even within the law to vilify his political opponents.
You don't get credit, or blame, for the things you don't do, for the inverse of the infinite set of unexplored potential. You get them for the things you do, er, do.
I apologize for that remark. I get worked up on this topic at times.
As do we all sometimes. Don't worry about it.
Ooookaaay. Maybe you could get a little more specific here. I really don't see it, especially given the situation.
Really? You don't see anything about his administration's callous approach to citizen eavesdropping? The ludicrous "Do Not Fly" list? Guantanamo? The recent reports about the Department of Transportation looking into putting GPS bugs in new cars? How the EPA's Draft Report on the Environment was edited to fit administration viewpoints on global warming? (That link's on a Democrat website, but it's well substantiated.) Hiding shill voices in the media to support him (Armstrong Williams, Jeff Gannon)?
I could go on -- the potential length of this list seems limited only by the amount of energy I put into making it, and to be honest thinking about things like that too much is soul-deadening. Suffice to say, there's enough that it seems less like a bunch of isolated instances, and more like there's a culture of this kind of thinking in Washington at the moment, and the closer you get to the White House, the thicker the air gets.
The real reason we invaded Iraq was a combination of 1) sanctions were crumbling as a result of bribes in Europe and economic pressure in Asia, 2) His behavior in the past, and 3) He would have had nuclear weapons within a couple of years, removing the option. I'm glad we don't have a third of the set to go with North Korea and Iran. I supported the war for that reason.
That was not the story Bush gave at the time. Unless I've missed a major recent press conference, even now, when questioned about Iraq, he talks about terrorists! We probably read different websites, but what I've seen is that Saddam was rather unlikely to have aided Al-Qaeda, due to their differing goals.
War is a serious thing, it requires a tremendous positive action to do something like that, even if wars these days aren't declared unless they're "on terror." Mentally rewind back to the days before the war, and it sounds funny to invade a nation because "sanctions were crumbling." The details of Iraq's nuclear weapons program are unproven to this day. Afganistan did happen, it is true, it didn't catch anyone but it did happen. It's something of a shame, perhaps, that after that, Bush diluted our military resources in attacking Iraq instead of choosing some other action.
Concerning Lincoln: well I will admit that I am not particularly well-read in that area. However, a lot of people seem to really like Lincoln, that proves nothing but is perhaps indicative concerning a relatively uncontroversial figure, and war is a funny thing in that you don't always get your way even if you do things perfectly (which is a good reason to avoid it if possible). I will say that Wikipedia's entry on the American Civil War states that the Confederacy left the union even before Lincoln's inaugration, so avoiding the war would have left the country split.
Now that's just gratuitous.
Yeah, but ya know, when the urge of the joke overcomes you.... My responsibility is to laughs, first and foremost. Nyuk nyuk nyuk.

The terrorists are you
Yes, you, the voter. You've allowed this to happen in every vote you made for an authoritarian politician -- I can name ONE that has followed their oath (Dr. Ron Paul of Texas http://house.gov/paul )
The telecommunications companies are regulated by Congress, illegally and unconstitutionally. Communication is speech. Speech is an inherent right all humans share and can not be infringed by any government.
You give them the power to regulate, they'll make it their power to control in their favor. Initially that favor is only financial -- take care of their nepotism and cronies. Eventually they turn to "help the needy" when the regulations for the needy really only help the monopolies they've created. In the end, the control is about power -- absolute power over the minions.
Don't don the tinfoil hat, it isn't necessary. Just see that every empire has its day, and the ones most responsible are those who elected, not those who were elected.
I vote only for myself -- each and every line of each and every ballot. In my mind, I win. I picked the candidate best suited to represent my family and I. -

If so, write them a note voicing your displeasure with H.R. 4569. If not, write to YOUR representative (http://www.house.gov/writerep/
Be tactful. Be succint. Don't be a flaming jerkass. Here's what I sent to my representative...feel free to plagiarize:
Mr. Carter,
I am aware that you are not a sitting member of the Judiciary Committee, but I am writing you in the hopes that you will discuss upcoming legislation with fellow Texas representatives Lamar Smith, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Louie Gohmert.
It has recently come to my attention that the House Judiciary Chairman has introduced a bill (H.R. 4569) into committee that embodies, in my opinion, an appalling attempt by a private industry to subvert the legislative process in order to protect its archaic business model.
As I'm sure you're well aware, the United States Congress exists to serve the liberty and security of its citizens, and not to guarantee the existence of any public corporation or private industry against the winds of change and innovation. Legislation such as this proposed "Digital Transition Content Security Act of 2005" is not crafted with the interest of the American consumer in mind, but rather with the intent to protect an existing content delivery and distribution model by criminalizing techonological innovations in this digital era.
An Act such as this one effectively deprives American consumers of their Fair Use rights as provided under existing U.S. intellectual property laws, and by extension, damages our economic stability by stifling the innovative forces that have kept America at the forefront of technological development. Furthermore, forcing U.S. manufacturers to adopt specific technology into all of their products places them at a distinct economic disadvantage in the world marketplace, and this country can ill afford the further loss of exportable goods.
Please do not be misled by the entertainment industry contentions that they are "losing" millions of dollars in revenue annually due to digital copyright infringements. Any first-year college student with a logic course on his transcript knows this is a fallacy of the most obvious variety. One cannot substantiate the presumption that every "pirated" copy of a protected work necessarily translates to the "loss" of one retail sale. One honestly cannot even translate it to the loss of one potential sale. It doesn't take an MBA to realize that the industry's claim of "lost revenue" is truly nothing more than "potential, unrealized revenue possibilities." That is to say, they display a best-case sales scenario and blame digital piracy for the shortfall that reality presents.
I urge you to voice your disapproval for H.R. 4569 to your fellow Texas legislators on the Judiciary Committee. This bill does NOT represent the interests of the citizens of Texas, nor of the U.S.A. as a whole. A vote for this bill would be a vote against the Fair Use rights of the taxpaying people of this economy and a vote against the spirit of innovation that made this great nation the undisputed superpower in the world today. I place my trust in you, and know that you will make the best decision in the present and future interests of the *people* whom you represent by voting down such special interest legislation as H.R. 4569.
