Re:it depends what you want to do with it
I print 5X7 prints with my 2.1 Megapixel Cannon all day long at 1200dpi and get 35mm 1hour processing quality prints.
Even if you've got a bottom-of-the-barrel $49 printer, it will do at least 600x600DPI. A 5"x7" print will use 3000x4200 pixels at that resolution, or over 12 megapixels. Dye sublimation will hide the loss of clarity because the process is inherently blurry at the pixel level, there is no set of sharp dots. But if you are looking for great contrasty detail, like nature photography where you want to see veining on a dragonfly wing, you are going to want those pixels. A 2.1 megapixel camera will give you far less than 300x300 DPI on a 5"x7".
Even a (relatively) cheap 35mm SLR like the Canon Eos Rebel at under $250 will easily take negatives with ordinary film that will print a 8"x10" that you will need a magnifying glass to see all the detail.

HP Deskjet 960C.
Contrary to popular comment here on
/., the HPDJ 960c does NOT do what I expect it to do on the Linux platform w/CUPS.
Sure it works, and for B&W it works fine. But when I try to print color photos (on photo paper) it just blows. I have to print over the network to it from a Windows machine.
According to HP this printer will print 15ppm draft B&W and 12ppm draft color. Unfortunatly I have absolutely *no* use for draft mode so what good do these numbers do me? Marketing ploys and mind games. I am thinking for the work I do (B&W mostly) that it is around 5 - 7ppm all text.
I like the printer in that it is about $200 retail, it has both USB and LPTx, and it is relatively quiet compared to my previous printer.
Problems are that it is slow, it runs out of ink WAY too fucking fast (I mean w/my DJ 400c I used 2 B&W cartridges, and 1 color cartridge in 5 years), w/this printer, 2 B&W's and 1 color since December 25th. Note: I printed TONS more shit in 5 years than I have since Dec. 25th.
CUPS makes printing on the Linux machine ok. It's nothing special but it works. I still have to print from Windows if I want color photos to look right. It's slow and it sucks ink.
If you are using it for B&W text mostly, it's affordable, good quality printing (600x600 dpi black, 2400x1200 dpi photo color), and it has an LPTx port for Linux.
YMMV. -
Re:Hey! Is there even an up-to-date...

hp-6s
the hp 6s seems to fit your bill... solar powered, not overpowered, does fractions, bit ops, base conversions, parens, etc... according to hp its only $10, and not as bulky as the graphic calculators we're all familiar with.

Re:Works: Doesn't Necessarily Contain Word(?)
More to the point HP has never distributed "Works Suite 2002" with PC's; it distributes "MS Works 6.0". Therefore it cannot be said that Word is being dropped, since it was __never__ bundled in the first place.
It should be noted that HP is giving away a 30-day trial version of Corel WordPerfect Office whilst also continuing to bundle away Ms Works 6.0 with is PCs.

Re:I used to like 1394Since I could not find a USB cable
It comes with a USB cable. Look in the box, troll.

At least a year too late...
HP released this same product over a year ago (and has already killed off the product line) they haven't gotten aroundto killing the link on their site yet. You can see the HP Digital Entertainment Center HERE They even were selling these at Best Buy for $995US but I heard a rumor from a B.B. manager that in the whole US they sold 6 of them! Cool Idea, but too expensive!

Re:I actually work for HP...
would be 17 cds long
So about 10Gb of the disk consists of a hidden partition containing software I will hopefully never need to use? And worse, containing software I don't want. Most of the software bundled with computers nowadays is pretty useless.
The product specs don't make this clear. it says "Huge 80Gb disk"; is this a 90Gb disk with the 10Gb missing. Or is it a 80Gb disk with only 70Gb actually available? -
All tape doomed anyway.Given that there are several companies working on largeer DVD formats, tape will die out. I read recently at Computer edge that Toshiba, Sony and Pioneer are all creating a new format with blue lasers that will blow away CD's and DVD's in size. Toshiba's will be 30-to 35 gb in size. This size can store 3 hours of video on them in raw format.
This could also have the effect that codec wars would die out as well. Why use one when you could record raw onto it? (well except for those Dr Who marathons) A DVD player that would not need decryption/encryption is cheaper to make.
As data backup it would be great I could store approximately 450 CD's in MP3 format on a single disk. Imagine a portable player for that baby! I'm drooling already.
Unfortunatly this tech is still about 2yrs away. I can't wait!
There is a small consolation however - I've seen a new DVD-RW drive showing up here. It's a HP CD-RW drive recently advertised at $599us. Hm.. wonder if it does VCD's as well.

Wireless Peripherals
Check out the HP 995C here.
It seems to support Bluetooth out of the box. A little pricey to me, but it seems like a good deal. -
CompetitionThis is competition for the HP (yes, Hewlett Packard) de100c home entertainment device.
Good luck. -
Re:Inside the company
One of the companies even has a competing box on the market now.
Could this mysterious other company possibly be Hewlett-Packard? (Hint to Slashdot - I'd like to see a review of this next.)
Another one has a PVR box for sale, which is something we all wanted to be added to the Zapstation.
Umm - well then why didn't they add this in? It seems like a natural.
