My $0.02 is to buy the Logitech DiNovo. I understand the desire for an integrated Mouse, but I have yet to find one that works well. I run a demo environment similar to what it sounds like you are building, and have have tried A BUNCH of wireless keyboards/mouses. I have had nothing but problems until I purchased the DiNovo. All of the IR and all the other RF solutions would drop keys on the keyboard, or more annoyingly, the mouse would be uncontrollable. I have a whole drawer of wireless KB/Mice that were crap! Another note, if you have compact florescent lights in the room (kind of look like the florescent tubes all wound up to look kind of light an incandescent bulb) these can really wreak havoc on any IR solutions. Good luck.

To make this guy REALLY miserable, we should send the junkmail to his neighbors addresses with his name on it! This would be especially effective using the porn junkmail!!!

Now the Cable company is geting in on it, but they're leaving out lots of the features that make my Tivo and ReplayTv ultra convenient and consumer friendly... Oh yeah, I'm on that. It's a shame when companies lose sight of the consumer.

I think that those "ultra convenient / consumer frientdly" features are one of the things that has prevented mass adoption of TiVo and Replay. they need to dumb down the boxes to make to more consumer friendly! Sure, your average slashdot reader *wants* the features, but the average consumer won't know how to use them, and will never try. KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid)

...while I'm ranting, they should use this same philosophy for Microwave ovens too! I just want three buttons: Popcorn, reheat coffee, and the minute plus. Who the hell roasts a chicken in their microwave anyway???

Privacy issues aside, why wouldn't you like targeted advertising? Instead of watching commercials for tampons, denture cream you will get the Dell adds and Cable Internet ads. We'll never get advertising-free TV, but at least it's advertising for products that you *may* actually buy!

Why don't they actually show a detailed picture on their web site (yes, I know they have their patent document, and a fuzzy prototype pic.), or actual songs, just strange audio clips. They also say that they are going into production in December 2000. Where are they?

'bunch of eerie sounds and a patent application do not a product make! It is enough, however, to raise many $$$ in V.C. funding!

This would be a great addition to Legoland . They could make one of those big lego statues of Bob Marley (I would recomend the one of Bob smoking the ganja )! It could play Marley hits on the hour, and have smoke come out of the joint on the half hour.

"Mommy hurry! I want to see Bob get stoned!!!"

  13. Visions of the Future on Uptime Realities in the Internet World · · Score: 1

As we continue to depend more and more on networks for day-to-day operations, reliability becomes a must. Is it going to be expensive? YES. That doesn't mean that it won't happen or that it doesn't need to happen. How will these networks transform from being a pr0n conduit to carrying traffic such as VoIP (as a business, not the lame implementations we have seen so far), without having some sort of (good) reliability?

This reliability WILL come about one way or another.
