Ogg Vorbis Plug in for iTunes
There is a plug in for iTunes that enebles playback and encoding of ogg files

Re:Wish it read "iTunes to use open formats"
It uses mp3s, and you can also use other formats like Ogg Vorbis. http://www.illadvised.com/~jordy/ Open enough?
-
Yeah, but will it play oggs?
No, seriously.
qtcomponents has not been updated in almost a year and has to my knowledge never really worked. It is open source, but according to a bug posted by an Apple developer, it uses the now obsolete SoundManager and will have to be rewritten to use CoreAudio before it'll work again.
The other component, while being even longer since it was last updated, worked great. Although it had a few annoying bugs, it was quite usable right up until QT7 landed, and now it doesn't work at all. It is not open source, so you're pretty much out of luck.
Has anyone found any alternative way of getting oggs to play in iTunes? -
Re:Time to open it up!You might not get this, now the threads a bit old....
You posted this as AC below: Furthermore, since we're talking about iTunes specifically, maybe I'll give it another chance when I can play my ogg files on it.
Lo and Behold!:

Mac only though I'm afraid, heh heh heh.

ogg/vorbis slowdown in iTunes
I just upgraded my 700MHz G3 iBook from 10.3.5 to 10.3.6. Everything went smoothly, but now iTunes stops occasionally for periods of varying length when playing ogg encoded music. I'm using the Ogg Vorbis component 1.0d8 available here.
Anyone else notice this? This never happened with 10.3.5. Would it be better with the other one? Must check... -
Re:So when are we going to see some new formats?
There is an ogg control that works double plus good for playing Ogg vorbis files under iTunes (at least on the mac and with 4.5).
Clicky.
I, personally, wish to god somebody would write some sort of plugin that would sort mp3's in some sane way. iTunes is absolutely horrible at handling mp3's and their various tags (or lack thereof) something winamp perfected years ago. -
Itunes + sourceforge = oggOS x + Itunes 4 + ( software drop or mac os x hints ) = Happy OGG Listener
I use Amadeus II for my music editing.
I can't believe I can listen to the files in I-tunes, thanks slashdotters. I know one good thing that came out of this "news" article.

Re:True to a point...
Though they over look all of the proprietary Apple formats that are attempts to lock comsumers into Apple. Quicktime, Apple's AAC, their restrictive iPod and iTunes, and just about every product they put out.
Quicktime is just a means of sequencing frames. It is not a format let alone a proprietary one. I don't see why people continue to think it is one. AAC wasn't developed by Apple. Read their own webpage no it. Also, note there is a difference between AAC and an Apple DRM'ed AAC. The iPod plays AIFF's, MP3's, AAC's, and DRM'ed AAC's. No one is forcing you to encode your music in AAC or limit your selection of music to DRM AAC's from iTMS. Also, iTunes plays Ogg Vorbis files via a plugin. If you're really miffed that the iPod doesn't currently play Ogg files, then simply don't buy it. Why bother going on a tirade against Apple? -
Re:OK...Do a search around the net. There are a couple of plug-ins that allow iTunes on the Mac to play Ogg. I am sure the windows version will not be very far behind.
Here is one example of a Itunes Ogg Vorbis decoder.

Re:iTunes...
... is a 20MB download, has a 35MB memory footprint, doesn't support FLAC, Ogg or MPC (hence doesn't play most of my music collection), doesn't seem to support ReplayGain, has a huge slow GUI, and doesn't seem to have a plugin system that would allow me or others to fix any of these things.
So why should I use it instead of foobar2000, or even WinAMP?
Because none of those other programs let you purchase music from a catalog of 400,000 songs with a single click, for only $0.99, start listening to them instantly, get the cover art too, and burn the song to a CD whenever you want?
Anyway, why treat it as iTunes or nothing? The point is, does iTunes offer something that no other program does? Yes. Since it's free, why not keep it around, too?
BTW, iTunes does have a plugin system that allows you to add support for more codecs. It's called QuickTime. Here's an Ogg decoder QuickTime plugin for the Mac - now that iTunes is available on Windows, I wouldn't be surprised if a Windows version comes out soon.

Re:Other updates today
I believe so, yes. Check this page for more info.

Ogg Vorbis pluginIs the vorbis plugin available for windows?
All I can find is
:this link for OSX -
Re:Excellent..
Err... um... there's a drop in QuickTime component that gives ogg support to iTunes. Here is the home page of the Quick Time Components project, and here is a direct link to the Ogg Vorbis decoder plugin. I don't know about an encoder plugin, but I've used the decoder plugin for quite a while now. Also, contrary to some posts I've read at macosxhints.com, you DO NOT have to rename files from
.ogg to .mov. -
OGG Plugin
Yup, it's here.

Re:vorbis!
ogg support is now available for quicktime and itunes. So I'd assume that someone will do the natural thing and get it into the ipod soon.

Re:Evolution Screenshots cache / mirror of mockups
As I said in another thread. This interface is *very* similar to Microsoft Entourage. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but Entourage does a few other nice things to refine it a bit. Some screen shots of Entourage:
Address Book w/ small buttons
Mail
Calendar

Re:Outlook 2003
Woops. Forgot to add an image with small buttons of the address book. All the panes work with small buttons.
Address Book w/ Small buttons
As you can see this is very similar. I like the Entourage UI to be honest. -
Re:Outlook 2003
This interface is *very* similar to Microsoft Entourage (Outlook for Mac). The biggest difference is the buttons exist at the top instead of the bottom in Entourage. Even the order of the top row of buttons is the same: Mail, Address book (contact), Calendar.
Here are some screenshots of Entourage:

Re:AAC?
You can get an iTunes plugin here. There, now get off your knees and stop begging and pleading.
-
Re:not a dupe!
they're not really two projects. the quicktime component folks had a message up on the front page for months that said that oggs didn't play under QT6. from what i can tell, this guy came by, familiarized himself with QuickTime over a weekend, and fixed the component, which is now here.
ps. if you have an ipod and would like to join a bunch of other people in trying to convince apple to support oggs in ipod hardware (probably in vain), there's a petition. it is theoretically possible via tremor, for you FP naysayers. -
Re:I'm confused
You're right. We could play Ogg-Vorbis files in Quicktime and iTunes before, using a different component.
So the headline should read "Now _this_ component can do what you've been doing for a while."
-
Sounds more like a bugtraq issueOk, I know this is cheap but...the wording in the article makes the useful plugin sound more like a security problem
:))a plugin for QuickTime and iTunes that enables the user to play all of those Ogg Vorbis files that you have sitting on your hard drive
