Re:Thomas Jefferson
My point was that though he opposed them to begin with in the end Thomas Jefferson did support copyrights and patents because they could encourage progress in the arts and sciences.
Also Thomas Jefferson opposed the merchantilists and instead supported yeoman farmers. Here is a webpage about a disagreement between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson, wherein Hamilton did support merchantilism. Jefferson even issued a warning about the corporate aristocracy, "I hope we shall take warning from the example and crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and to bid defiance to the laws of their country." In a letter to George Logan on November 12, 1816 he wrote: " We have already reached the point where the "moneyed corporations" no longer feel any need to "challenge" the government. They have already fully integrated themselves into it. The executive branch is already peopled by corporate men, the law makers find it nearly impossible to be elected without corporate financing and the administrators of the regulatory agencies (such as the SEC) are selected by an executive branch whose main concern is to avoid any threat to the corporate world's ability to act unilaterally and without serious regulation of any kind."

Why taking on RIAAl, if you can take on Bush?
Please forgive me for posting like this, but this is a dead-serious issue, so please, please,
please read on. This is a story that *has* to be told. So, I beg you: read this out before you hit the del button. If you do, Slashdot will be on CNN tonight and Bush will be out of the White House.
So please, give me the benefit of the doubt and read this trough before you hit delete.

Slashdot readers are smart people that can add one and one together. So, when they read why Second Life's supposed economy isn't a whole lot more than a typical pyramid scheme because the Linden company can print Linden dollars out of thin air at any rate they like, and can therefore buy and sell as much dollars at the exchange market as they like, so they can pretty much manipulate the whole SL economy as they please, they will also be able to figure out that the real US banking and monetary system can be manipulated at exactly the same way, because the Federal Reserve has enjoyed the absolute power to do literally anything it wants, which is probably why Henry Ford said he believed there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning if "the people of the nation" would "understand our banking and monetary system".
If they also read how the US corporations, owned by the same people that own the FED, systematically and consciously rape the poorest people of the world by using the trick of putting whole nations into debt to make them dependent and controllable by raising inflation tax, just as has been described in protocol number 6 of the so-called Zion protocols and continue reading that protcols, they would also understand why Henry Ford was a known anti-semite, as well as Winston Churchill, who wrote about a world-wide conspiracy for the overthrow of civilization and for the reconstitution of society on the basis of arrested development, of envious malevolence, and impossible equality that "has been steadily growing".
If you believe, like Ford and Churchill, in the existence of such a conspiracy, Slashdot readers would not just take for granted that it was "the Jews", but look at the most logical place for the conspiritors, which would be at the top of the pyramid, for who wars are very profitable as well, as is also described in said protocols. So, When Slashdot reades also learn that following Hitler's money leads al but directly to the White House and that Al Qaida in a way can be more or less considered to be the last remaining and still active Waffen-SS Division, because there are pretty direct links to the Waffen-SS Muslim Devision hardly anybody knew existed, they will also be able to understand Multatuli's extremely inconvenient truth laying this all out in detail.

I know this is off-topic, but....
you might want to read on, anyway. Last week, I realised that Second Life's economy isn't the only economy that's a pyramid scheme benefitting above all the Guys at the top of the pyramid. I combined that with John Perkins story about how the super rich manage to rape the poorest people on the world, so I got a little worried, and decided to follow the money. Then, in a hunch, I decided to follow Hitler's money and also discovered a clear and credible link between the Nazi's and Al-Qaida. A few more steps and reality makes your worst nightmares look like a walk in the park. -- Multatuli --

Re:Hmmm.
Does that mean that if I link to slashdot which has an article that links to 2600 which links to DeCSS source (or something that is illegal in whatever country), or even any other convulted route that I am breaking the law?
Well, according to a Dutch judge, you might be. In the Radikal case Dutch, a second site, Indymedia was sued for having an article with links to mirrors of the original Radikal site.I really don't see why you need a judge to make yourself look stupid in national and international publications when someone links directly to items on your website. When someone was linking to images on my website (where I pay for excess traffic) I did not call a lawyer. I went to the Apache website where the documentation about mod_rewrite has the excellent Apache 1.3 URL Rewriting Guide which has a cookbook entry (cut, paste, edit names) for exactly this, which can be easily adopted to stop 'deep linking'. Set up a nice 403 errorpage stating that linking directly to articles on your site is not allowed by policy and go on.

a court order stopped indymedia netherlands from linking to a site that dealt with methods to stop nuclear waste being transported by rail. the interesting thing is that it wasn't linked directly to the information, but required the user to click three or four times before getting to the banned article in question.

Dutch Court Orders IMC-Netherlands to Remove Links
More than five years ago, the German zine 'Radikal' published instructions on preventing nuclear-waste transport by rail, which have since been placed onto the internet. Deutsche Bahn, the German rail operator has responded with lawsuits against the original host, search engines, and Indymedia-NL. Indymedia-NL had links to mirrors of the zine, indirectly linking to the instructions, which were published as a comment on its open-publishing newswire.
On June 20, a Dutch judge ordered Indymedia-NL to remove the links, requiring "Indymedia immediately after receiving this sentence to remove and to keep removed the hyperlinks, which are placed on (a) website(s) under the control of Indymedia, if those hyperlinks lead directly or indirectly to the Radikal article."
Indymedia-NL has responded with a press release, stating that they consider "the ruling a dramatic limitation of the possibilities of the Internet and the freedom of speech."

It applies to a lot more...
From the press release:
In the verdict of June 20th, the judge has ordered to remove the hyperlinks
and to keep them removed, in as far as these hyperlinks lead to the Radikal
articles, either directly or indirectly and notwithstanding whether these
hyperlinks were placed by visitors. If Indymedia NL does not comply with
this order, a penal sum of 5,000 Euros per day can be imposed. The judge
ordered that, like an Internet Service Provider but just as much like the
editors of a newspaper, Indymedia NL is, in principle, responsible for the
content that has been published with its help.(My emphasis)
First, that means that if /. was based in .NL, doing this would be illigeal.
Second, the judged rulled that as an ISP, Indymedia NL, is responsible for the content of their client.
I really hope that the Dutch constitution isn't to dependent on Jurisprudence, otherwise this rulling is definitely a Bad Thing(tm)

Judge will motivate on april 25th
From indymedia:
So far, the verdict is "intermediate"; no motivation has been given yet.
Does anyone know if that means that the verdict can change?
Also, DB promised to involve the Dutch police. This could mean two lawsuits: one between DB and XS4ALL, and one between the Dutch DoJ and XS4ALL.
