Re:Yeah, it's not a "Western stereotype." It's tru
Yes, you are talking about comics. Such as this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuni_ga_Moeru or this http://www.debito.org/abunaijinkenyougohouan.html Not this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsukuyomi_Moon_Phase or this http://insani.org/haruoto.html

Re:no mention of platform?
There is very much a linux port of onscripter, and not just for the gp32 as someone else mentioned. Insani have a complete SDK, which they use when translating nscripter based games (see here and here). It runs on OSX too AFAIK, hence most of insani's releases being tri-platform~

Re:What is it?
"My question is why did it take more than cursory research to discover that information?"
Hmm. Their FAQ and their Projects pages both clearly state that these games are meant for an 18+ audience. I am not sure whether this constitutes "more than cursory research".
"I think it was simple deceit to present it in this fashion."
Actually, I think the poster's mistake was in assuming that this audience knew what the term "Visual Novel" means; in the Japanese gaming industry it represents a fairly distinct genre of games with text overlaid on static images, almost all of which are 18+ in nature.
Anyway, I've played the demo. There's no sexual content in it at all. -
